ACCORDING TO the newspaper, Congressman Richard Gephardt lobbied heavily for McDonnell-Douglas, a large employer of voters in his district, in order to secure a contract for building a new military airplane. Now that McDonell has been eliminated from the bidding process, Gephardt says the plane isn't needed if we're going to balance the budget. This is a textbook example of how this guy operates. When the possibility of pumping some pork into his district existed, the airplane was a good idea. Now that McDonnell has been eliminated, the airplane is a bad idea if we're going to balance the budget. Everyone knows that the last thing Gephardt is concerned about is a balanced budget. What a phony.
I WANT to comment about the military. We put gays in the military, and now we've got women fighting right along with the men. They can't, but political correctness says they can. It's to the point now that even Bill Clinton, who hates the military and loathes it, wants to build a plane that can run down missiles and shoot them down. It may be a little too late and too little too late. America could be held hostage to these nuclear weapons. While we've gutted our military, these other countries built their military up. I'm afraid we're all going to have our Medicare cards and our Social Security and stuff, but our young men may have to pay for these mistakes. I wish the elders would sign up to go over to fight instead of the young boys pay for the elders' mistakes.
IF I'M not mistaken, broadcasters such as KFVS charge their advertisers based upon the number of viewers they can claim they to have. So the cost of broadcasting KFVS's programming is actually borne by their advertisers. So when they want the cable company to pay them again for the privilege of broadcasting, they're asking for double compensation. If I were an advertiser, I'd take a very dim view of that attitude.
UNION MEMBERS should be outraged that the union bosses took more than $35 million of their money to defeat Republicans in Congress. They would have been better off if they had just flushed that money down the toilet, because not only did they fail to turn Congress back to the Democrats, they now have a bunch of mad Republican lawmakers who will not be sympathetic to unions in the future because of the lies and scare tactics used in their advertisements. I hope the rank-and-file union worker remember these geniuses during the next union elections.
MY SUBJECT: Cable TV. Our city hall franchised our present cable TV company. This same cable TV company has raised rates over 20 percent in the last two years. Now they are considering dropping a major network which happens to be our local TV station. This is on top of having an inferior service for Channel 6 because the cable TV company will not change it's current number in the cable TV system. These are all serious downfalls preventing us from having a good cable TV system. However, the major question is, how did our city officials grant a franchise that did not protect us from excessive price increases and inferior service?
I JUST read the Speak Out about the student who was aggravated at SEMO for putting parking meters at Academic Hall and who said he had to park three blocks away. Is this what our younger generation is coming to -- too lazy to walk three blocks to go to school? Do they have to park at the front door in order to go to classes? I see that so often with the younger people. They drive around in parking lots for 15 to 20 minutes trying to find a parking place closer to the front door in order to keep from walking a couple extra feet.
IF TCI drops KFVS from the lineup, it won't bother me. I'll just watch it on the TV antenna. But if they drop KFVS, maybe that means we'll get either a Memphis or St. Louis station to replace them. That would be real nice.
IN REGARDS to the person who bought the stamps that wouldn't stick, you ought to come to Jackson. Jackson has the most helpful post office. I had the same problem and they replaced my stamps. They're always helpful in helping me to know the postal regulations when I mail difficult packages. Jackson has the best post office in all of Cape County.
I'M CALLING about the article in the paper titled "Good kids face murder charges in death baby." If they did this, it was very wrong. But I can't see one bit of difference in murdering a baby before it's born or one just after it's born. Both are very wrong, and I'm sure in God's sight either one would be murder. Would someone please tell me the difference? This was two young kids, scared and probably didn't know what to do, who must have loved each other very much and not out of a little thrill, then they get pregnant and then have an abortion.
I WAS reading in the paper and watching on the TV news about the refugees over in Rwanda about the complaints they've got. Some of these people that think they've got it so bad in the United States and are busy picketing certain companies because of their so-called unacceptable unemployment practices and some of the treatment of their employees think they've got it so bad. Why don't they go to Rwanda? Maybe some of the folks over there would be tickled to death to get a high-paying job with an oil company regardless of what they're called. Maybe Rev. Jesse Jackson could go over there and straighten them out. It looks like he's so good at straightening everything out and putting pickets up around different companies and trying to tell them how to run their company.
I ENJOYED the comment where a caller said, more or less, that the Republican people are more informed on the issues and the only reason anybody would vote Democrat is because we didn't understand. Maybe that's why we vote for Democrat. You think we're ignorant, but maybe we have different concerns than what you have. Maybe we're more concerned with other issues than what you're concerned with. In any event, I'm terribly offended. I'm a well-educated Democrat. I voted the way I wanted to vote, and it's not because I didn't understand the issues. It's because what you think the issues are not necessarily what I think the issues are.
I WAS calling in regard to the person who had the problem at the post office with the stamps not sticking. I just wanted to say I also got a roll of stamps from the post office, and they wouldn't stick to my envelope. You've just got to really make sure you get a lot of moisture on there for them to stick. But I agree that it's not right that the post office won't give you another set because a lot of those stamps did pop back off.
