THIS IS a note to "Don't throw stones": Why is the president shielded from scrutiny? Were Reagan and Bush shielded from scrutiny from the Democrats? Other than Iran/Contra, did they have any more criminal investigations against them than Clinton has had in the past four years? And are you so perfect you set standards that the president and anyone else are to be judged by? This 26-year-old conservative believes there are more honest people out there to be president, and they don't have to be a liar, a cheat and a thief to do so.
I'D JUST like to say that you need to pay wages to keep people off welfare. If you pay a decent wage, you'll get people off of welfare. And if you take them off of welfare, they're going to steal to get something to eat, because they're not going to work for what the people are working for on minimum wage right now.
IS BOB Dole dumb or just stupid? He seems to be helping Bill Clinton every time he opens his mouth. Now he is possibly giving Clinton another 5 percent or 6 percent by snubbing Ross Perot. Those commercials don't help either. People don't buy that trash anymore. They're starting to realize that most of the negative things he tries to blame on Clinton were the Republicans' own doing. Keep it up, Bob. You might be the first presidential candidate in history not to win a state.
THE DAYS allowed for shooting fireworks are much too long. I spend my mornings picking up fireworks sticks from my yard, and my dog spends her days under the bed, and we are both too old for either.
I WOULD like to thank Thomas M. Meyer and Councilman Williamson for their work in the community and building Washington Park. I think it's wonderful. The photo on the front page of Monday's paper was also very beautiful.
YOUR CARTOON in the Sunday paper reached a new low. Regardless of your political views, this is the lowest form of trash journalism. You really owe your subscribers an apology. This is really inexcusable.
I WAS watching the Discovery Channel where a meteorite crashed into a car. Once again, I think a meteorite hit TWA Flight 800. That's what I think.
I WAS just reading about nurses in schools. The Cape schools hire LPNs, and I was reading where someone wrote in that they should be RNs. I think hiring LPNs is a very wise decision. An LPN can do as much as a RN in many situations, and I don't think you can go by the LPN/RN title. I think it depends on the individual. I think a LPN could do a good job at this, if not better, than some RNs could. I'm a LPN, and I feel very strong about you cannot go by a LPN or RN on education. I think you have to go by the individual. I think LPNs in the school would do a very, very good job.
THE MISSOURIAN'S editorial column Sunday would be laughable were it not on a serious situation. By all indications, the state is doing well at the end of Gov. Carnahan's first term. To suggest that we have a catastrophe if Carnahan gets a second term just because he supports the rights of working people to organize is ludicrous. It's easy to see why educated, serious thinking people do not take the Missourian seriously.
RECENTLY AN opinion was printed in Speak Out concerning the cemetery of the innocents located on I-55. If I correctly understood the caller's opinion, it was that we, the pro-life, should strive to make a difference not just a point. The manner in which this particular caller suggested that we do so is that we remove the signs and build a community center in their place. These are exactly what you describe them as, signs. They are signs of our times and how easily you wish to disregard them as unnecessary. I do indeed feel strongly as I know others do too, that if these crosses manage to make an impression or change the mind of one man or woman considering aborting their unborn baby, it is well worth any expense. Our differences in opinion is a simple one. You are interested in the lives of the children who were born to mothers and fathers who believe in the pro-life position. I am interested in the lives of the children who's mothers and fathers do not. I am interested in the 4,400 children each day and every day in this country that we call the land of opportunity who aren't given the opportunity to take their first breath outside their mother's womb, more or less given the opportunity to play ball on Friday night in the area youth center.
QUESTION: WHAT is the difference between a child slave labor sweat shop and the schools and fund-raising companies using children as salesmen? Answer: At least at the end of the day, maybe the child in the sweat shop gets something more than a candy bar for his trouble.
I HAVE read your Republican paper and all the negative reports on our great President Clinton and tried to keep my thoughts to myself. But Sunday's cartoon cover-up is the last draw. I cannot believe your paper would stoop so low and print a nude cartoon character of anyone, let alone, next to Today's Prayer and on Sunday. Are there any Christians left in Cape Girardeau? Certainly not on your newspaper staff.
I WOULD like to call attention the column Jack Stapleton wrote Sept. 23 in the Southeast Missourian about the destroying the perfectly good mental health building in St. Louis, built less than 30 years ago, and then building another structure to perform the same function at another location in the area. Then ask these questions to yourself. Where does the money come from? The taxpayers of Missouri? Who controls the Legislature in Missouri, Democrats or Republicans?
WHY DO all politicians just talk about Medicare and abortions? Don't we have any other problems to talk about, or is that the only thing they think will get them elected? They ought to use more wisdom.
