I FEEL that the director of the Missouri Department of Conservation should resign immediately. At the June 19 meeting of the Conservation Commission, Jerry Presley, who is retiring in December to take a job with Doe Run Co., agreed to allow the Doe Run lead-mining company to begin drilling at Round Springs and other strategic areas above the Jack's Fork River and Current River watersheds, which will pollute the major recreational areas that people from Cape Girardeau have enjoyed for areas. I began camping at Alley Spring and Big Spring and Round Spring as a 12-year-old child. Thirty-six years later, my children and I go to these places to canoe and swim and enjoy the beauty. The lead mining will only pollute the rivers, and will make the children of Missouri sicker than even the little plastic shades, which have gotten national news coverage. These recalled products are much less of a threat to us than the lead mining companies in the pristine wilderness of Missouri.
THE EVENING that Christ was arrested, at his last supper with his disciples, he instituted the taking of bread with the words "This is my body." As a woman, I am ashamed that other women, under the foolish influence of planned parenthood and the National Organization of Women, would use these same words to promote abortion on demand. They preach their gospel of death, and worship at their altars of materialism, modernism, "me"-ism, liberalism, hedonism and socialism. While the rest of us sit behind our closed doors cluck-clucking at the awfulness of it all -- and do nothing. While the forces of darkness howl at our door, the dogma of death, the unborn and the helpless. It is time to declare war, a war that will not be fought with guns or explosives, or fought on a battlefield, but fought at the ballot box. In the schools and in the courts, we need to vote out any man or woman who has declared on the side of the death cults. We must give the schools back to parental authority and away from the disastrous National Education Association. We must express strong sentiments whenever there is a vacancy on the Supreme Court. Remember, we all must die someday, and when we face that awful day of judgment, we stand alone. We alone must defend and justify what we have done and what we have failed to do.
I JUST saw a beautiful sight this morning before going to work as I glanced out my kitchen window. I saw the morning sun rise through my neighbor's trees, falling on the previous day's fallen rain on the glittery diamond grasses, as a sparrow winged its way from limb to limb where beneath children normally play. Today must be a special day.
ATTENTION JACKSON taxpayers. Don't let school officials fool you. We don't need to be burdened with larger property taxes. People think bond issues don't raise taxes, but they do. So get out and vote no in August.
I BELIEVE the person in Texarkana, Ark., needs to check things out a little farther in regard to Clinton putting troops in Saudi Arabia. The troops were put in there as far back as Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush and left there for Clinton. They're their to protect the oil supplies that this country needs so badly.
I WILL take the Rhodes Scholar anytime over the flunky.
I THOUGHT the display of the little flags along the curbs for the Fourth of July was very nice, impressive and patriotic. But I think that either the people who put them out or the families who had them in their yards ought to have picked them up before they were rained on, knocked to the ground or into the gutter. That I think is very, very, sad.
THE PREVAILING moral thinking of today is like the prevailing wage: too low to get by on.
I SEE in the paper where 342 Republicans and conservative Democrats voted against same-sex marriages, and 67 radical Democrats voted in favor of same-sex marriages. So, guess who I'm going to vote for in November.
I WAS just reading the comment about Rush and Bill's deferments. The caller who is obviously trying to support Clinton is wrong again as most people are when they try to support Clinton. They usually don't know what they're talking about or they try to slant it so it supports Bill and not his opponents. The man is wrong. Rush Limbaugh did not flunk out of SEMO. He quit. Rush also did not try to dodge the draft as Bill Clinton did successfully, Rush went to be enlisted but was deferred on medical reasons, not because of a student deferment as the caller said.
I WOULD like to make a correction to the caller whose comment concerned the proposed recreation lake. According to the feasibility study, which this person obviously has not read, only 20 to 25 percent of the lake will lie in Bollinger County. If that caller thinks rush hour is bad now, wait until the predicted 2 million annual visitors start clogging narrow, two-lane, windy Highway 72. Once again, Bollinger County will get the shaft from Cape County.
I WOULD like to make a comment about the Olympics. That thing is nothing but a bunch of big ripoffs. There is someone making money -- such as these torches, I thought there was only one torch that went across the country. Now I find out there are 10,000 of them and they're being sold for $275 a piece. That thing is nothing but a dang ripoff.
