DURING THE Reagan/Bush years, the press paraded the homeless before the cameras for the country and the world to see. Where are these homeless now? Are these homeless working all those jobs Bill Clinton claims he's responsible for? I don't think so. Was it that big a problem, or was it created for the press to use?
FOR YEARS we didn't have the money to fix the sewer system in the south end, but when raw sewage flowed into creek by the soccer field -- which we had money for -- a way was found to fix this system. Oh, well, we at least have soccer fields, the airport and other parts of Cape fixed already.
"THE WIZARD of Oz" play at Schultz School was a very enjoyable evening. We couldn't believe the talent of Dorothy, Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow, much less all the rest of the crew. The voices of the seventh graders was unbelievable. Congratulations, students, you did an excellent job.
THE LAST thing we need in the White House is Bob and Elizabeth Dole. Bob Dole just wants power, and he will use that against the middle class and the poor. He will work for the Republican Party. Bill Clinton was a poor boy, and he knows how poor people have to operate. That's the difference between the two men.
THE RANDOM Acts of Kindness program has gone entirely too far. It appears to have affected your editorial staff. Tuesday morning's editorial on the fuel-tax question had a minimum of Clinton bashing and was almost well-reasoned. This has clearly gotten to your editorial staff in an unexpected fashion. Where have they gone that they no longer bash President Clinton in the most partisan fashion?
I'VE READ so much about impeaching the president from the people in this county. It seems ridiculous. This man has done more for this country than anyone's done in the last 25 years.
THE SOUTHEAST Missourian of May 17 had an article in which John McEnroe was honored by Father's Day committee to be one of four fathers of the year. I think this is an insult. The man is separated, divorced I suppose, from his wife. They have three children. He is now living with his girlfriend, and they have a 4 1/2-month-old daughter. John takes turns keeping his three older children. I suppose he brings them home with his girlfriend or whatever. Like I say, this is an insult to all the good, hard-working fathers of America. What could this committee possibly have been thinking?
I AM writing this in regard to the Speak Out comment that was entitled "Higher-paying jobs are there." I'm very interested to know where this person works. I wonder if he/she is taking in consideration that people in their 50s without transportation to go on long-distance trips to apply (much less be employed) for jobs. I most certainly can't afford cab fare, which is the only mode of public transportation in this town. That, of course, could be some material for an entire page for Speak Out.
