Bible verses address family values

WE HEAR a lot about family values in the news these days, but to understand the Christian view of family values, you need to read Luke 14:26 and Matthew 10:34-35. I think these make things perfectly clear.

Jack Buck's silvery voice

ONE ITEM was not included in the 1997 World Series coverage, namely the silvery telecast voice of Jack Buck. No debate on this.

Here's one for the books

ON SATURDAY, the Southeast Missourian carried an AP article on the World Series which said "Cleveland needs two wins to become the first road team to win games 6 and 7 in the World Series." This, I believe, is incorrect unless my memory got lost in the boondocks, the St. Louis Cardinals in 1926 won games 6 and 7 in New York, defeating the powerhouse Yankees 10-2 and 3-2.

Don't smoke while pumping gas

I WAS at a gas station and a guy pulls up there not too far from me, gets out and starts filling up his car with gas while smoking a cigarette. Who's responsibility it is to let it be known that they shouldn't smoke a cigarette while pumping gas? Is that the gas station attendant or who?

Bigger vehicles can do more damage

I'M CALLING in response to the person who was complaining that insurance rates went up when he bought a bigger, sports utility vehicle. He felt that it was much safer, so his insurance rates should be lower. Well, let me explain this to you. That big sports utility vehicle you have causes a lot more damage to things that it hits than a smaller one does. Therefore, you'll see a rise in your rates. Also, it is probably considerably more expensive than whatever vehicle you replaced. But primarily, the problem is that it can do a heck of a lot more damage than a smaller vehicle can.

Scouts do a good deed during food drive

I ARRIVED home and found it to be raining. I noticed a plastic bag had been attached to my door and, along with it, my newspaper had been placed on my front porch. Thank you, Scouts, for your good turn. In addition to Scouting for food, you managed to do your daily good turn by saving me from unnecessary steps in the rain to get what would have been a rain-soaked newspaper.

Clinton sold out to China

I CANNOT understand why Bill Clinton is kissing up to Red China. I guess it goes to show all the Chinese in the White House at the fund raisers was actually true. Now Bill Clinton says it's wrong to isolate China. It's odd to me that we do business with one communist country and refuse to do business with another communist country such as Cuba and Castro. I haven't seen Castro in the White House hugging Clinton. I guess that's the reason why. Bill Clinton has to live up to his word. He sold the United States out to China. It's plain and simple. It's on tape. Wake up, people.

DST is a problem for some elderly folks

PLEASE TELL me why we have to have daylight-saving time. If people have to get up early, they can set their own alarm. You take us old people, we have to have somebody come in and reset out clocks. Now is that being fair? My mother lived to be 100, and we always set our alarm and got up at 5 a.m. We didn't think anything about it. What's the matter with this generation? Are they lazy or what's the deal? We never changed our clock one bit when I was a girl, and I'm going on 80 and know what it's like. I have arthritis in my hands, and I have to have people come in and change my clock. It doesn't make sense to me. And here I am almost 80 and I know I've got my good mind and I know that I can get up and I can set my alarm because I can hold it in my hands. But when it comes to a wall clock, I have to have somebody to do it for me, and I don't think that's being fair to us old people.

America still protects its freedoms

THE PERSON who doesn't respect this country or salute the flag or doesn't want to teach his children or grandchildren anymore about what a great country America is: If you can get the two brain cells that are currently working in your brain to work together and focus long enough to read this, you might learn something. The very things that you are saying are constitutionally protected under our wonderful, wonderful system. If you lived in some other country, you would be beheaded in some places for saying something like that. You wouldn't even be able to think it because the thought police are everywhere. You may feel terribly oppressed, depressed and repressed, but I'd invite you to go traveling the world and then you see if you enjoyed being an American anymore. You are allowed to say things here. The very thing that you just did is what makes this country great. It's horrible what you said, I don't believe what you said, and I don't take it seriously because people like you go running the other direction and don't work to hold the country together the first time the least little thing goes wrong.

Thief overlooks the good stuff

I'D LIKE to thank the thief who stole my radio out of my little white GMC pickup. Not only was he was a thief, you're not very good at your trade. Next time, check the glove box. I had my cell phone and wallet containing about $190 in cash in it. And also had a Vortex field jacket laying in the seat of my truck that was worth about $300. Next time, maybe you need to just look for more than my radio that's about nine years old, worn out and when I tried to hook an amplifier up to it, it caught on fire in the back. So, you did me a favor by taking the radio out of my truck because I was getting ready to replace it anyway.

In opposition to narrow-mindedness

I'M CALLING in regards to your 11 year old who said he rather smoke than watch Ellen Degeneres. First off, smoking is what killed my grandmother and I don't know anyone who's grandma was killed by a lesbian. Second of all, until everyone learns to accept everyone else and go on what's in your heart instead of skin color, sexual preference or what football team you like, the world is going to continue to exist as a harsh environment for our children to grow up in. You're always told to just be yourself. That's hard for some people to do because they fear for their lives because of narrow-minded bigots who continue to harass good, decent, but different people.

In support of adult comedy show

HAS ANYONE who has called in about "Ellen" actually watched the show? The show is very witty and highly amusing. Apparently the 11-year-old who said he would rather smoke a cigarette than watch the show was influenced by his parents' opinions on homosexuality. This show is an adult comedy which is highly enjoyable, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Ellen Degeneres is funny, talented

I'VE NOTICED a lot of heated discussions going on in Speak Out about the abortion situation and the gays on TV. People who are calling to complain about "Ellen" are probably the same people who set up that eyesore abortion display along the interstate. I have but one thing to say to you people. Don't put up tacky displays and don't criticize people on television for being honest about their lifestyles. Ellen Degeneres was successful for years before she admitted she was a lesbian. And what should it matter? She's funny and talented. It's not as if she's going to steal your children in the night and attempt to convert them. She gay, big deal. She's still funny.

Mixed signals from women's march

ONE OF demands of the Million Woman March, I understand, was independent black schools. Pardon me, but didn't we just get through celebrating these brave young children integrating Central High School in Little Rock 40 years ago? As for the keynote speaker, Winnie Mandela, this is a woman whose favorite way to win hearts and minds is to set those who disagree with her on fire.
