Closed meeting in Commerce

I'M CALLING in regards to city officials who have closed-door meetings to decide city business. The Commerce town board on March 9 had a closed meeting, did not notify anyone in the town other than the town board of the meeting, and they decided to allow drinking of alcohol in their city park.

Prisoners in other states

FOR SEVERAL years I traveled all over the country and could not help but notice in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana that instead of the prisoners staying in the jailhouse and doing nothing, they were out working on the side of the road, chopping trees and moving rocks and all this type of stuff. Alongside the road with a big double barrel shotgun was a fellow that watched over them to make sure that they didn't leave unexpectedly. I guess I wonder why, when other states can do this, why is it that other people get excited when I get excited when I see deputies washing their own cars in Missouri?

Speed, tailgating

WHETHER MISSOURI continues the vehicle safety inspections yearly or not, it's not going to change injury and property damages until drivers learn that speeding and following too closely determine the majority of the accidents. Seat belt use will help save lives, but hard-headed drivers will never change. No wonder the stubborn people of Missouri call this the Show Me State.

Change the stop signs

BACKWARDS STOP signs. Yes, I agree with the caller at Bertling at North Sprigg. The signs ought to be corrected and reversed or the city at least put in a time activated stoplight before someone gets killed there. It's ridiculous like it is.

Clinton as role model

THIS IS to the Speak Out caller who thinks that the Southeast Missourian's political cartoons, some of which are critical of Clinton, send the wrong message to children. Can anyone with average intelligence, Democrat or Republican, actually believe that Bill Clinton is a good role model for children? Here we have a man who is facing trial for sexual harassment for allegedly exposing himself to a young female state employee who has, at last count, 13 associates who have been convicted of felonies, who gets caught lying almost daily and who has had so many scandals that most people have lost count. It's hard for me to imagine how anyone of any party can respect such a person.

Use common sense

DO YOU really think children should be suspended from school for touching a small girl swinging? You're telling little boys, "You're bad boys, that should not be done." Well, children are children and should be handled that way. By the time these two 7-year-old boys grow up, that story could multiply into a great big scandal. People don't know how to handle children anymore at all. They're in for a rough time if someone doesn't interfere with that case. There's no common sense used anymore at all.

Add the home and garden channel

THE NEXT time that the local cable system in Cape and Jackson feel the need to do some channel changing again, I'd like to put my vote for the HGTV, which is the Home & Garden TV channel. For those of you who have may seen it somewhere else, I think you'll agree it's a very informative, interesting shows somewhere along the Discovery line as far as household and garden type of activities. Does anyone else feel the same way in this area?

Government meddling

I SAID several years ago that it's a waste of time for our federal government to meddle with the Middle East, just like it is a waste of time and money in meddle in the lives of blacks and whites. I'm talking about federal government. They are the ones that are doing the meddling, and they have no business there or in our personal lives.

English, please

I WONDER to whom some television commercials are directed, especially those commercials spoken entirely in a language other than English. I simply change channels, so it seems to me like a waste of money on the part of the advertiser. Regardless of how sophisticated the advertising company tries to come across, there are relatively few people in this country who speak a foreign language fluently. I suppose the advertiser thinks this country is full of phony wannabes. But does that attitude really sell?

White House scoundrel

I FOUGHT in two wars, World War II and Korea. Helped to take Pork Chop Hill. If I had it to do over, I wouldn't do it if I knew were going to have a scoundrel in the White House like we've got today. It's just not worthy fighting for anymore. Him and his no-good, corrupted administration. We're as bad as Russia ever thought about being.

Question of freedom

I WOULD like to thank the House members who voted against the seat belt law, especially regarding trucks. I think it's a wonderful thing, because we don't need Big Brother in our lives, and these men and women who voted against this have a sense for freedom, and that's what America's all about.

Confederate symbol

THE CIVIL War may have been about industry and money, but it was God's will that the black people be free. The Confederate flag may not always stand for a gentle way of life, because we all know stories of the Ku Klux Klan, and that certainly is not a gentle way of life. I would say to those who want to keep the Confederate flag, do so in the privacy of your own home. Don't it put on vehicles where it will offend another person or hang it out in your front yard.
