WELL, I'M for one disappointed with this newspaper because on the front page Sept. 3. It says, "Talk of politics clouds prison site." Peter Kinder says he doesn't believe that his stance of overriding Mel Carnahan's abortion veto would create any problems with a prison site in Charleston, and as spokesman for Carnahan says they're separate and should be kept separate. ...

Rumors aren't news for front page

WELL, I'M for one disappointed with this newspaper because on the front page Sept. 3. It says, "Talk of politics clouds prison site." Peter Kinder says he doesn't believe that his stance of overriding Mel Carnahan's abortion veto would create any problems with a prison site in Charleston, and as spokesman for Carnahan says they're separate and should be kept separate. Then you go off and put it on the front page. It's a big rumor. I mean, that's not news. Rumors are not news. Please get back to the news.

More important world news to consider

PRINCESS DIANA is dead now. What are we going to do, just keep talking about it for the next 100 years? We've got more issues that need to be looked at such as Mr. Clinton is getting ready to send troops to Bosnia, and they haven't released the investigation of why that bomb blew up over there and killed two U.S. soldiers. There needs to be more news instead of just keeping on the same thing. Maybe that's why the people are hating the major news media, because they just report the same thing. And they're wanting people to boycott these magazines that print all this stuff. Hey, look at what CBS, ABC, and NBC are doing. They're just doing the same thing.

Fathers have to pay for legal expenses

I'M NOT fortunate enough to be a parent, but I don't think it seems fair that women can get free representation from the child support offices and from the state to collect child support owed them from the so-called deadbeat dads while the men must pay for legal expenses to collect their court-ordered visitation rights from these deadbeat moms. Men must pay their own attorney fees to fight charges brought against them by the child-support offices that are unfounded and untrue, while the woman who made these allegations is out no money and is not even punished for making false allegations. It appears to me the courts are discriminating against men. If the men were allowed their court-ordered visitation and this was enforced, they would be allowed to spend more time with their children. Maybe they would be willing to pay their child-support payments on time.

Downhill career track

IF I were a member of the media or a news photographer, I believe I would never again make another picture of any celebrity. Then see how fast their careers go downhill.

Past lawsuits are still news

IN REGARDS to Kim Barrett's letter to the editor on living old news in the past, she has the right points, but she's using them in the wrong direction. For example, she says, "Leave old points in the past." One of the reasons we take points off of a driver's license is for correction purposes. One reason we have criminal records is for the same reason. She said that Debra Mitchell-Braxton shouldn't be held accountable for what she did last spring. Well, Mitchell-Braxton sued the university several times, and I think that's a viable point and should be brought in every article about her.

Show Me Center lacks good handicap parking

THE SOUTHEAST Missourian's newspaper article on the great bragging of the Show Me Center's great success over the years is about 50 percent correct. The parking is terrible. The handicap parking is really stupid. The handicap spaces should be within ten feet of an entrance to the building.

The future of the lake project

SOMETHING'S GOT to give on this Cape County/Bollinger County lake issue. The debate seems endless and often acrimonious. In fact, the stories revolving around the lake proposal have been so numerous with so many plots and subplots, the whole thing has become the stuff with which myths are made. It is for that reason we need to go ahead and build it. If we do, I predict with some confidence that the day shall come when a lady will rise from a lake and give a sword to a man or woman who will, as ruler, institute a reign of peace and prosperity in Cape and Bollinger Counties such that our area will be known as a late-20th century Camelot.

Hazing complaint was revenge

THIS IS to the student who said the Sig Taus were verbally abusing him. Maybe he should try something real like the Marine Corps boot camp. The boy knew he wasn't going to make it. They told him in the tape he wasn't going to make it. It was revenge. The university took his side on it.

Coach hands out verbal abuse

I'M CALLING in regards to the hazing incidents at SEMO. What's the difference between the hazing incident at SEMO and the degrading and humiliating verbal abuse the boys had to tolerate from the baseball coach at SEMO this past year? University officials knew all about it, and they did nothing. Four local players left the team.

Sex-offenders list should be free

I'D JUST like to say I have been keeping up with the issue of the sex offenders. I don't think it's right that they are trying to protect them like they are. If we want a list of these sex offenders, we have to fill out a written request and pay for it. They have more rights than innocent children, the elderly or whomever they have offended. I think this list should be known to everyone as citizens, taxpayers or whatever. We have the right to know and shouldn't have to pay for this list or be put in the same profile as this class of people. I would like to hear other comments about this manner.

Enterprise zone gave tax abatements

YOUR RECENT editorial about what a good deal the enterprise zone is for Cape Girardeau did not give us the complete information. How much tax money has Cape Girardeau lost because business owners within a 24-mile-square area received an abatement -- that means 50 percent off of their tax bills? Why don't we homeowners receive a 50 percent abatement if we live in that area?

Street noise means school's open

WELL, SCHOOL is back in session, and everything's back to normal on North Clark Street, Cape's mini-Indianapolis 500, screeching tires, cursing, speeding, boom boxes and no cops. Gee, it's great to know my tax dollars are going for such a worthy cause: education in the '90s.
