Effort will clean up drugs

BOY, I'M glad to see one thing since the new police chief got in there. In the 200 block of Middle Street, there were 25-35 drug dealers. They're gone, plus there were about 400-500 customers who drove in there each day buying drugs. It was like drug alley in there. Now since the new chief took over, it looks like people live there again, not just drug dealers taking over the street. I think we ought to really get behind the chief and push all these drug dealers out of Cape and quit letting them feed our young kids and destroy them. Let's get busy here. People who protest these abortions and all, get behind it and take you sign down there and march up and down on these drug dealers. The preachers need to come out of the closet, go down there and march with them. Get rid of these drug pushers.

Support for police chief

I'M BEHIND Chief Rick Hetzel 100 percent on his aggressive approach to policing the streets and arresting the law abiders.

Genealogical perspective

ENJOYED THE Mark Bliss feature on the two women who had reached their century mark. Being a genealogist, I would have appreciated a brief documentation of their blood lines. Even a mention of their married names would have made it more meaningful. We hear so much about genetics these days. Let's give some of the ancestors credit for passing on hearty genes. There are many readers out here who find this fascinating.

Clock for Show Me Center

THE SHOW Me Center needs a big clock. Maybe someone wanting to advertise would one up in there somewhere.

Lott lives in glass house

IF I were Trent Lott, I think I would keep my mouth shut about cutting welfare. He has got the poorest, poverty-ridden state. Conditions are deplorable. Just visit Mississippi. They live in shacks, roofless houses. It's a disgrace. And he goes on wanting to cut welfare. I think that man lives in a glass house. And above all people, I don't think he's anyone to talk or be the leader to have anything to say about welfare.

Bridge lights too costly

I THINK it's a complete waste, the idea of spending over $400,000 for decorative lighting on the Bill Emerson bridge. There's very, very little traffic that's going to be from outside the area or people who aren't regularly crossing the bridge. There's nothing more than like Archie Bunker: putting lights on a bowling ball. It's just a complete and utter waste.

Puffers are rude

YOU KNOW what, you puffers are the most rudest people in the world. I can go anywhere. And what happens? Some joker comes along and sits besides and puffs an old cigarette and blows that smoke right in my face. You puffers are the most rudest people in the world.

Water for out-of-towners

YOU PEOPLE of Cape are the biggest bunch of whiners and freeloaders I have ever heard of. What sewer did this person crawl out of that complains to Speak Out about out of town people coming to Cape and using the water. Don't they know that the prices they charge for sodas in restaurants covers everything? If you don't want out of town business, how long do you think any business would survive as cheap as some of you people in Cape are? We take care of our problems. Why don't you?

Clean up the messes

WHEN IT comes to dilapidated, burned out houses and buildings in the northeast section of Cape Girardeau, I would like to know where the city staff is, and the police department. It's no wonder that people in the northeast section of Cape, who have worked their back ends off to keep their property in good condition, have to sit by and watch this deterioration around them. It only degrades and reduces the values of their homes. And one particular thing I'm speaking of is the burned out house sitting in the 700 block of North Main Street, which was burned out several months back, and all the city has done is tack a condemned notice sign on the front of it. It is just a burned out hull, and someone is going to get hurt. And I would like the city manager, the mayor and the city council to drive by and take a look at this house and see if they would permit it to be in their neighborhood. I think not. As a taxpaying citizen of this town who takes care of his property, it is a disgrace for people coming into this town and seeing things such as this and the Marquette Hotel and old St. Francis Hospital. City council, get on the ball. Instead of raising water rates, do something about cleaning up these messes all over Cape. And while you're at it, check on the abandoned cars sitting in backyards.

Carnahan and the unions

CARNAHAN'S TRUE colors show through. Now he wants labor unions to have names and addresses of state employees. It's bad enough that unions can go into state offices to organize workers, but to give them addresses so they coerce you in your home is outrageous. Carnahan's allegiance and obligations to unions is really scary.
