I'VE ALWAYS enjoyed Joe Sullivan's column but last Friday's about how the phone company can't call you back anymore and about duct tape was one of his best. His column makes my day. We need to laugh

I'VE ALWAYS enjoyed Joe Sullivan's column but last Friday's about how the phone company can't call you back anymore and about duct tape was one of his best. His column makes my day. We need more to make us laugh.

Bring back chief, princess

I WOULD just like to say my two cents worth about the mascot for SEMO University sports. There was a half-Indian dressed up as an Indian chief in the Homecoming parade. I talked to him before the parade started, and he informed me that his mom lived on an Indian reservation. I asked him, "You are probably not against having Princess Otahki and Chief Sagamore as a mascot at the basketball games and the football games." He said, "Not at all, I think it's a great honor." I think if you'll talk to anybody of Indian descent, they will inform you the same thing, that they are not downgrading them, that they are honoring them. If you will look back and notice when we had the mascot, we won more football games and more basketball games because there was more pride. I would love to see those two mascots brought back. I think it is an honor. I don't know who the radicals are who are against it, but they don't know what they're talking about. I have talked to any number of people of Indian descent, and they all say they are honored by it. There is not a more beautiful sight when they march in before the game starts.

Killing is always wrong

ANY CHRISTIAN who thinks he has the right to kill somebody else because he doesn't agree with somebody else's practices has Christianity all wrong. I'm not pro-choice. I'm pro-life. I think abortion should be outlawed. But what do people think they're gaining if they're doing the same thing abortion doctors are doing: killing.

Band was treated rudely

I AM embarrassed to say that I ever lived in Cape Girardeau. We are living in Jackson. My daughter came home from the SEMO parade. She's a junior at Jackson High School in the band, and I am appalled at what happened. Our children from Jackson band were spit on and cussed at and booed at. It just makes me sick. There is too much arrogance and rudeness. I don't even want those kids to march over there again. I am going to complain wherever I can. This has got to stop.

Glad to see little goblins

I JUST want to report that this Halloween we had more trick-or-treaters than ever before, and I'd like to commend the parents who decided that this should not be a tradition that stopped. It was fun. I had fun. The kids had fun. It's part of growing up in this country.

A significant role model

I CERTAINLY agree that serious consideration should be given to naming a school in Cape Girardeau after Miss Inez Smith. It's my opinion that no administrator or other teacher had a more profound effect on generations of students. The knowledge she imparted to generations of students and the lessons of dignity and compassion that she taught through example certainly enriched the community and the country in a way that is impossible to measure.

Unresponsive bureaucracy

AS I look at my broken mailbox which used to be embedded in concrete in front of my house and which was broken by a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier by stuffing two 10-pound mail-order catalogs into a small mailbox, I continue to get angry at the fact that when I called the postmaster here in Cape Girardeau about repairing my mailbox, I not only did not get response to fix my mailbox, I did not even get an "I'm sorry" from either the postmaster or the letter carrier in question. Who do these people think pays their salary anyway? The last I looked at a paycheck stub, it said I had paid over $3,000 in federal taxes this year, not to mention my federal cigarette taxes, my federal gasoline taxes and my federal excise taxes. Monica Lewinsky and Bill Clinton? That's not the problem. The problem is the unresponsiveness of the federal bureaucracy from top to bottom to the very people they work for: us.

Please pick up the food

I WANT to say that I think it is a good idea to leave bags to fill with food for the needy, but please pick them up. I put out food last year, and it was never picked up. So please and check and see if there is a bag of food on the porch.

Don't jump to conclusions

I'M WONDERING if I may be living in Salem. I see the beginnings of a witch-hunt starting here. I'm very sorry for all the residents who were frightened by that poor woman when she became so ill, but to categorize all mentally ill people into the murderer category is ludicrous. And to make people pariahs because of their disability, be it physical or mental, is not a good thing. Most mentally ill people are not going to go out and hurt someone. So let's lighten up and look at each case individually instead of lumping everyone in the same category, and let's have a little compassion for this poor woman.

Using recycled bags

I WANT to compliment the Southeast Missourian for using recyclable plastic bags. I'm a recycler, and believe me I was delighted to see that they finally switched to those. I really am pleased.

Please return skeleton

I'D LIKE the person or persons who stole my Halloween skeleton which is made out of gallon jugs to please return it. Or maybe the parents would ask where they got it. It was stolen over Halloween night. I made it up myself. I would appreciate the return.

Name school for Margaret Reed

THIS IS about the naming of the new elementary school. I have known Margaret Reed personally for many years as a kind and intelligent and concerned citizen. I knew her best through many of her students she helped to start on the groundwork of their education. I feel her contributions to this community and especially the school system make Margaret Reed a prime candidate when the new school is named.
