MY 10-year-old son is an excellent pitcher. He has been pitching directly to his target since he was 14 months old. However, because he is not the coach's son he never gets to pitch. The coach's sons seems to be always the ones who are chosen to be pitcher. This hurts my son because he is aware of his ability, and it hurts me because it's just not fair. I told my son that his father may be moving to Cape Girardeau, and then my son will get to pitch...

Lament of a pitcher's mom

Politics of confrontation is back

IN A recent public forum, Democratic congressional candidate Richard Kline of Gipsy referred to Veterans Administration hospitals as "killing centers." A VA administrator in the audience took exception. Kline then more or less told the guy where to go and challenged him to settle the issue outside. I don't know about the rest of you, but the politics of courtesy and consensus are boring to me. Three cheers for the return of the politics of confrontation.

Maybe it was best for the baby

READING IN the paper about the woman who so-called abandoned her child at the hospital. You've got to give it to that woman. She didn't abort the baby, and she had it in a hospital and left it where she knew it would get good care. That may have been the best thing in the world, under the circumstances, for that baby to have been left in the hospital.

U.S. travels far to give handouts

I WOULD like to make a comment on the waste of American taxpayer money, like the trip to China, taking 1,200 people. Can you imagine what it costs? And now it's off to Russia. I can remember when the beggars came to your door for a handout. Now we spend a fortune traveling around the world giving everybody handouts. The government wants to overhaul the IRS. How about overhauling our pork-barrel government.

There must be a good reason

I WANT to compliment the Cape Girardeau School Board members on having to make a tough decision on salary contracts. I know it's not easy to hold back they money, but there must be a good reason that almost all of you decided that was the right thing to do. Thank you for making the tough decisions.

`Professional' means more work, no pay

WHEN I taught, it always made me nervous when people referred to me as a professional. The only thing it could mean was that they wanted me to do more work for very little or no compensation. Other than that, the word seldom came up.

Nothing holds a candle to Clinton

IF ONE were to look at the Speak Out column, one would not think the Southeast Missourian was Republican all. It seems that it is very Democrat-sided. I don't know if this is for balance or what. When I look at President Bush and President Reagan, nothing they did holds a candle to Clinton. Clinton is so close to being impeached that it's not even funny. In fact it is rather pathetic. I guess a caller wants to point out mixed things. I guess when you look at Clinton you could say no party is pure.

Need more exits at Jackson park

JACKSON FIREWORKS on the Fourth of July were great. Thanks so much. I noticed they lasted longer this year. Half an hour would have been just fine. A comment on the parking lot near the band shell. We desperately need more exits. Hundreds of people leaving through one lane is very dangerous. If there had been an emergency, it could create a disaster situation. Could another exit to the highway be built or widen the existing one?
