RADICAL RAY Umbdenstock recently told us that there were a few members of Congress worth keeping in Congress. This is an election year. I think that if Mr. Umbdenstock releases his list of those worth keeping, it will spell political doom for the members of Congress whose names appear on his list.
I'M CALLING about patriotism. There are a lot of patriotic people in this city. Between the dates of Veterans Day and Fourth of July, people should fly American flags to show our respect and admiration to the people who have given their lives, the ultimate sacrifice, from 1776 till now. These people have given the ultimate sacrifice for something we take so ungratefully, our freedom. We take it for granted everyday, the men and women of the armed forces. Let's all hang a flag on the Fourth of July and hope we never have to go through it again.
WITH NINE freestanding ambulatory surgery centers, why would Southeast Missouri need eight more. Could it be that these physicians just want more money? This is not a matter of need but of greed.
I WAS wondering if any police officers of the Cape Girardeau Police Department stop and require grown men walking around town with their pants pulled down to pull them up. I mean, can't they be arrested for indecent exposure? Thanks.
EARLY THIS morning I proudly placed the American flag sheet in our picture window. Thanks, Southeast Missourian, for providing the flag sheet each year just before the Fourth of July.
IS IT just the taxpayers having to pay the bill for Ken Starr, or is the Republican Party paying him too? It's a lot of political nonsense, and I for one will vote straight Democrat in December.
I'M READING about the Wolf Lake ZIP Code. I just wanted to remind you that when ZIP Codes came into effect, it was July 1, 1963, and that is Cape Girardeau's ZIP Code is 63-7-01.
JOHN ASHCROFT and the Southeast Missourian may be correct in saying the Internet hookup fee for schools is a sneaky tax. However, Ashcroft, Gingrich and other Internet advocates are way off base when they stress the importance of computers in schools. Many people assume that computers in schools and classrooms will somehow guarantee better student performance. Baloney. The public is being sold a bill of goods. There is no evidence demonstrating student use of computers will enhance student learning. Students may have fun surfing the Net and, when the teacher is occupied with another student, playing games on the computer, but that's about it. Call me reactionary if you want, but if it were left to me, I would take the computers designed for student use and give them a heave-ho. There is a place for computers, but when it comes to improving a solid education in the basics, they are counterproductive.
