Pedestrians had the right of way

THIS IS for the lady, and I use the term loosely, who was driving the large dark green utility vehicle in front of the Cape Wal-Mart at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 23. What is your problem? My 3-year-old son and I were trying to cross, and we did have the right-of-way. If you will look again, there is a pedestrian sign above the stop sign. I had already waited for two vehicles who rolled through the stop sign. You were the one who took time to stop after going through the stop sign to tell me you only had to yield to vehicles. My son was not pointing and yelling at you. He was pointing to snow on someone else's car. I am trying to teach my son to watch out for people like you who think they are above the law. And the next time you want to say something to someone, have the courtesy to let them reply.

Questions about County Park plans

I'D JUST like to know who gave Gerald Jones, the Cape Girardeau County presiding commissioner, permission to give all this county recreational area away. Doesn't he realize that the County Park North probably has close to 100,000 or more people each year coming to it and enjoying recreational facilities, which was intended to start with? If they've got 50 extra acres out there, why don't they just make more recreational area for the people of the county and surrounding area instead of spending $4.5 million for something that the university is going to be using. I didn't know the county was going to start providing classes for the people.

Who is the real final authority?

I'M CALLING in reference to the letter to the editor of Mark K. Slinkard where he says that he feels the Supreme Court is still the final authority in this state. Mr. Slinkard has never met my wife.

Dealing with telemarketing calls

TO THE person who's tired of all the telemarketer calls, I'm sick of them too. Every time they call me, I inform them to do as I do and most other people: go out and get a decent job and stop bugging people on the phone. If that doesn't work, get an answering machine. I guarantee you they will not leave their number. If all else fails, as soon as you recognize their voice and their pitch as being a telemarketer, don't be kind and nice. They'll just call back or they'll get you on their sucker list and sell that list to all the other telemarketers in the area, and then you'll really be bombarded. So when you recognize the call, just hang up on them. Don't say yea or nay, just hang up. I guarantee pretty soon you won't get calls anymore.

Tax cuts won't keep budget balanced

REPUBLICAN U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof has made what I consider a very radical tax cut proposal. What's wrong with him and Republican U.S. Sen. John Ashcroft? I thought they were fiscal conservatives and interested in keeping the budget balanced.

Phone system replaces real people

FOLKS, IF you have a problem and wish to speak to someone at your new electric company that you do business with, you'll never get to tell them your problem. All you'll get to say is 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5, and then they'll put you on with someone else and it all starts all over again. When you're finished, they do say thank you for using our company. I still don't have an answer to the problem.

Beware of virus on your computer

IF YOU haven't heard, IBM has announced a new virus on your e-mail. If you get an e-mail that says, "Join the crew" do not open it. It will crash your hard-drive. Also, do not open or even look at any mail that says "returned or unable to deliver." They said this virus will attach itself to your computer components and render them useless. It says delete them immediately, and AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and there's no remedy for it at this time. I've heard that it's already happened to some people around here, and they said to pass it around and tell as many people as possible. So I thought Speak Out might be a good source.

Frightening thoughts about guns

I SAW something the other day that really frightened me. It was a bumper sticker on a pickup, and it said "You can have my gun when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers." I thought to myself, they'll probably get his gun, because people like him probably only half a box of ammo left over from hunting season in his house, probably about 10-15 rounds of ammunition. They'll never be able to protect their family, their home, themselves or their Constitution with 10 rounds. There are bills in Congress to tax ammunition up to 10,000 percent. They were introduced by Sen. Moynihan. There's a move on to make ammunition so expensive so you'll never be able to use your guns. And after you shoot up your ammo, it doesn't matter if you've got your guns or not. There are no more bullets. Also, these kind of guys are the ones who, if the federals ever say turn in your guns, will forget about their constitutional rights or the reason the forefathers gave us the rights to bear arms in the first place. They'll turn them in because their wives told them to, and that frightens me.

The president is the victim

AFTER WATCHING the television news for days, I have decided that if Clinton did have a sexual relation with the intern, he was her victim. She was never a victim.

Casting those stones

ON THE Opinion page Jan. 24 in the column by Cal Thomas, he quotes the Bible for President Clinton: "Be sure you sins will find you out." The Bible also tells us the words of Jesus in St. John 8:7 when a woman caught in the act of adultery was brought to Jesus: "He that is without sin among you, let him cast a stone at her."

Time to apologize to Nixon?

WITH REGARDS to President Clinton and his Travelgate, Filegate and now Zippergate, if he gets away with all his cover-ups, the United States owes the Nixon family a big apology. Clear his name.

Starr is tearing country apart

KENNETH STARR is tearing our country apart. He has been trying to frame President Clinton ever since he has been in office, and the news media are helping him. Other countries are sitting back laughing at the circus of reporters like dogs on bone. We are all on this runaway train, and it needs to be stopped. We are tired of our tax money going to Kenneth Starr for such a terrible thing he is doing. He needs to be stopped now. Try to stop him, please.

Subsidize smokers who want to quit

I'VE GOT a good idea. Since the government is fired up on smoking and taking away the rights of smokers, not allowing them to smoke basically anywhere, why don't they subsidize smokers who are willing to try and quit go on the patch or the gum? You know how expensive that is for a smoker when he looks at dropping $35 to $50 just to satisfy the government and the non-smokers. They're not going to do it. So if the government really wants everybody who smokes to quit, maybe they should back them on the smoking-cessation program.

Thanks to theater manager

I'M CALLING to say a very special thank you to the manager of the new cinema, West Park Cinema. Saturday night during the rush hour showing of "Titanic," there was an emergency with my family, and they were very good and very prompt in coming to get me to let me take the phone call concerning the emergency. Then they allowed me to make a phone call to get in contact with the right family members. And to the manager at the theater I want to say thank you. I may not know your name, but there's a God in heaven who does. I appreciate you, and I know he appreciates what you've done as well.

Frailties understandable, but not lying

MANY OF our presidents have had apparent indiscretions in their private lives, if you can even say they have any privacy. Our presidents have human frailties. But to illegally try to hide the truth should be unacceptable to all of us citizens regardless of political affiliation. The judgment seems to be escalated by the news media, so what's new in this day and time with the news media bombardment?

TV replaces need for courts

WE REALLY don't need courts and lawyers anymore. The news commentators try everything on TV for us. If they only knew how foolish they looked and sounded, each one trying out do the other. Thank goodness for off switches.
