THE NUMBER killed by tobacco is a drop in the bucket to compared to alcohol. Isn't it odd that Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore rave against big tobacco companies? Mr. Gore and his family raised tobacco for years, a product that supposedly kills thousands. Why shouldn't he pay damages like Big Tobacco?...

Tobacco target

THE NUMBER killed by tobacco is a drop in the bucket to compared to alcohol. Isn't it odd that Mr. Clinton and Mr. Gore rave against big tobacco companies? Mr. Gore and his family raised tobacco for years, a product that supposedly kills thousands. Why shouldn't he pay damages like Big Tobacco?

Don't believe it

THIS IS for Shirley Patterson who wrote the column on Peter Kinder's error about the booing of the Boy Scouts. Shirley, don't you know better than to believe everything Peter Kinder writes?

Greedy seniors

I AM a senior citizen, and I know all seniors aren't in this category, but watching the political scene with retirees griping to politicians and wanting more and more and voting for the one who promises the most is sickening. These blue-hairs sitting on their sorry rear ends just can't get enough. They couldn't care less about anyone's problems but their own. There are people and children in this world who are starving and who live in the deplorable conditions. Do they want relief for them? No way. They don't care for aborted children. They couldn't care less about saddling our children with debt. What a spoiled sick group who can't see beyond their greed.

Nature's beauty

PLEASE DO not destroy the scenic beauty that is now at the floodwall. Nature's beauty is so much better than a manmade mural. Leave nature's beauty at the wall, please.

Belt-tightening

AN ARTICLE said "City schools tighten belt pending Hancock ruling." I would like to suggest that maybe next April 14 the headline would say "Taxpayers tighten belt in lieu of April 15 tax deadline."

Who pays for this?

WARNING, CAPE and Jackson city residents. Cape County planning and zoning does affect you. You pay sales tax in the county, and that is how they tell us this will be paid for. I have attended some of the County Commission meetings around the county where they are trying to explain this. So far, they have been unwilling or unable to explain how they will come up with the money to pay for this without using the sales tax money that is now used for county road maintenance and blacktopping. If county planning is approved, just watch. We will soon have to pay more in sales taxes or have a new property tax.

Traffic insult

I WAS sitting at an intersection. Because an older couple didn't get going fast enough, two young men behind them yelled an insulting obscenity for everyone to hear. It seemed like a beautiful day until that happened. What is happening to our society? God help us.

Efforts backfire

FIRST WE had Daryl Duwe grandstanding on the steps of the federal building as if state Sen. Jerry Howard has been tried and convicted. Then we had Ann Wagner in a disgustingly nasty letter defending Duwe as one of the most courageous and respected foot soldiers in the Republican Party. Now this respected foot soldier has slandered Democratic State Auditor Claire McCaskill as being "paraded around like a cheap hooker" on his Web site. Duwe states he owns the Web site, but he fails to mention how many sites he is linked to. Alas, here comes David Barklage holding various press conferences accusing Senator Howard of wrong-doing. Isn't it amazing these allegations surfaced six weeks before the election? I am a Republican, but I am also an independent thinker. I am saddened and disappointed that the Republican Party has sunk so low. If they think these sleazy tactics don't harm the party, they are badly mistaken and shame on the Missourian for giving front-page coverage. I have been weighing the attributes of several candidates, but thanks to Duwe, Wagner and Barklage I'll be casting my ballot for another party.
