This is in regard to the schools in Jackson. I think all these people moving to Jackson for the children's' education should have to pay double school tax. We people who have lived here for 45 and 50 years built schools for our children and grandchildren and paid for them, and I don't think we should have to pay for others who are coming in just for the education. If they want to move here for that, let them pay double tax and build the schools for their children and grandchildren like we old-timers did. That is only fair instead of putting all of the burden on all of us older residents.
Isn't it strange that groups like the Sierra Club, Green Peace, Save the Whales and all the save-the-animals groups are pro-choice caring nothing about human life but are so worried about animals. Ralph Nader and his Green Party whine about the death penalty, air, water, ozone, pesticides and animals but say nothing about aborting a child. The priorities of our country have changed. Now people run on the right to terminate a human life, and most put a person's personal choice above God's laws without question.
This is on the weed-abatement policy that we have here in Cape. It's too bad that we can't get anything done about things like that. I called about a house in our neighborhood in June and found out the weed-control officer was on vacation. It was finally mowed the first part of June. I've been calling for three weeks now asking when we could have it mowed again or what could be done about it. The weed-control officer is on vacation again. That is two times in two months. I wonder how much they really pay that man and how many vacations a weed-control officer gets again. I'd sure would like to apply for that job if I don't have to work but part-time. I think we need to find someone who will be in their office and take care of these problems when they occur.
The times sure are changing. I remember 30 years ago if you wanted to see somebody with body piercing and tattoos, you would see them at a freak show at circus. Now it seems to be commonplace on the streets of Cape Girardeau. You see guys with more metal in their lips, ears and eyebrows then you see at a junk yard. Shoot, there are probably more tattoos on people and more artwork on a person's body then there is on the mural down by the river. It is just something, isn't it?
You might be a nosy neighbor if you run from window to window in your house and watch your neighbors. You might be a nosy neighbor if you pull out a lawn chair and watch your neighbors talking to others. You might be a nosy neighbor if you peek in the neighbor's windows. You might be a nosy neighbor if you stand at the end of your drive and watch the neighbors walk down the street. You might be a nosy neighbor if you jump behind the bush so no one sees you peeking. You might be a nosy neighbor if you adjust your blinds 30 times a day. You might be a nosy neighbor if you watch your neighbors unload groceries in the garage. You might be a nosy neighbor if you stand and watch your neighbor having family time and working in their yard. If you might be a nosy neighbor, do you live on County Road 328?
I hope I never hear the word "survivor" again.
To the Speak Out caller was critical of David Limbaugh's column on socialism in the United States: I simply say the caller was wrong. He says socialism refers to government ownership of the major means of production. Wrong. Communism is the ownership of production and all other resources. Socialism, which is communism's first cousin, destroys individual and private ownership of production and redistributes income by regulation from government which is gradually helping destroy this once-vibrant free nation. Limbaugh is right. The caller was wrong.
I would like to thank the two gentlemen who stopped to help me when my car broke down on Bertling on Wednesday morning. They fixed up my car so I could get it home to my husband and made sure I didn't have to sit out in the heat. I just wanted to thank them.
The good people of Jackson have been getting criticized in your paper about the way we trim our trees. The people of Jackson take pride and take good care of their trees. The power companies have to cut the trees back from the lines so they won't short them out. If these people don't like the way we trim the trees in Jackson, I suggest that they move back to where they came from.
Because so many readers of the Southeast Missourian are for George Bush, I hate to be the bearer of such bad news. However, with the Bush campaign in such disarray, I am beginning to sense not only a Gore victory but one of landslide proportions. All I can say to Bush supporters is to steel yourself the best you can try to get mentally and physically prepared for four to eight more years of peace and prosperity.
It just occurred to me while reading the newspaper that I am just as tired of hearing of the election badgering as I am about the Jackson school problems. I hope both of them will end soon.
As Al Gore appears to be pulling further ahead, columnist David Limbaugh tells us Gore's campaign strategy is failing. Limbaugh seems blinded by the light of Gore's blitzkrieg surge in the battle for the oval office.
Oh, boy. Alan Journet and his buddies put together another entertaining letter displaying their extreme environmental viewpoints. I wish they would all just get in their little electric car with Al Gore and move to closest socialist country where they would live happily ever after.
Uh-oh. A Speak Out caller to the Southeast Missourian has claimed that Joe Lieberman lacks the character to be on the ticket to be with Al Gore. Look for Gore to drop Lieberman like a hot potato.
I would just like to say that it is refreshing to see a letter to the editor in the paper that speaks the truth about the Republican Party, and I really enjoyed the letter from Alan Journet and his colleagues.
