Leadership decisions

IN SPEAK Out, an Episcopalian was annoyed at the criticism of some who disagree with electing a practicing homosexual as a bishop. He proceeded to try to prove his point by stretching a few words of Scripture. Putting church leadership decisions above the Bible has been a problem from the beginning of Christianity.

Taking a stand

CONGRATULATIONS to the Alabama Supreme Court justice who will not remove the Ten Commandments monument from the state judicial building. It's about time someone showed some guts in the face of all the liberals who are hurting this country and leading it to perdition.

Leave it alone

I THINK they ought to just leave the Indians at SEMO. There are a lot more things to worry about than the name of a team. I don't think anybody should be offended. It's a team for a university. That's all it is. It's nothing derogatory. Get on with the more important things of life.

Republican educators

THERE SEEMS to be a misperception among some readers of Speak Out that the more educated a person is, the more likely that person is to vote liberal. In fact, college-educated people have been voting solidly Republican for years.

Confusing lanes

WIDENING OF Mount Auburn Road appears to be another roundabout-type mess. Who plans these road construction jobs? They need their slide rule taken away from them. Traveling south on Mount Auburn toward Independence Street, there are two lanes that widen to three a short distance before the light. A sign before the widening indicates only two lanes, and the inner lane can go straight or turn left onto Independence. But going straight is not possible because you would run into the turn lane for the northbound traffic. Every time I have been through there since it opened, drivers in the inner southbound lanes have figured out they can't go straight and whip over into the outer lanes. I have been almost hit twice this way in just two days.

Peaceful expression

AS A Christian, a follower of the Prince of Peace, I was so pleased that at least once in my 60 years of life I have been able to read an article in the Southeast Missourian that actually allowed those who work for peace to express themselves without being misrepresented or slandered. Will I have to wait another 60 years to read another?

Protesting the president

PEOPLE COMPLAIN that antiwar protesters are anti-Bush. What do you expect? He's supposed to be the president. Back in the Vietnam era, protesters were anti-Johnson when Johnson was president and anti-Nixon when Nixon was president.

School options

FOR ALL of you who want better schools and are willing to pay for it by increasing taxes: There are already better schools available. They are parochial or private schools. Instead of all of us paying for your children's education, maybe it's time that you pay for your own children's education.

History lesson

WHOEVER SAID Germany did not pose a threat to America better read up on some history. Germany declared war on America first, on Dec. 11, 1941, following a year or two of sinking U.S. naval and merchant shipping in the Atlantic Ocean.

Exposed to the truth

SOUTHEAST Missourian reporter Callie Clark has likely come under fire from the Cape Girardeau School District administration for her accurate reporting of what transpired in a Central Junior High School classroom on opening day of school. That's what happens when the public is exposed to the truth.
