SO now school officials plan to prosecute parents for their child's absences from school. Do those officials ever stop to ask why a child refuses to attend? Are they being bullied at school? Are they not getting the help they need with subjects? When these things take place and teachers and administrators refuse to see or address the problem, it is difficult to convince the child to go willingly back to the classroom.
AMERICANS should be outraged. Republicans in the Senate are blocking a bill that would give the commission investigating the BP oil spill full subpoena powers. Who are they protecting?
THOSE who are constantly stating that a casino in Cape Girardeau would take money out of the community in casino profits should take heed. The gambling money is already being taken out of the community by those who go to Caruthersville, Metropolis, and St. Louis, and those cities have the jobs and value added to their community from the casino companies' operations.
IN 2006 when the stem-cell issue was up for a vote, zealous opponents launched a blitz of misinformation in the last month, before the vote was taken, in order to impose their religious beliefs on the rest of us. Now, with the casino vote just over a month away, the same element has launched the same kind of smear campaign in order to once again impose their beliefs and allow our downtown to stagnate further.
I attended the Altenburg fair this year for the first time. I enjoyed it so much. It is so much cheaper than the SEMO District Fair, and the food is three times better. I also enjoyed the mule jump. It was my first time seeing it, and it was amazing. The SEMO District Fair needs to take advice from the little town of Altenburg.
CLEAN the House and Senate in 2010 and the White House in 2012.
We had a wonderful time at the East Perry County Fair. It's great that you can attend something like that and not have to pay a dime to park or get in. We loved it. However, we were saddened that someone thought it necessary to steal items from our trucks.
AN AP article in Sunday's Southeast Missourian stated: "A casino license is worth big bucks. Missouri casinos reported adjusted gross receipts last fiscal year of $1.7 billion." With such a huge amount of money involved, one wonders how all that money was distributed. Should we have a lottery to guess what percentage went to "good causes"?
I question those who believe the casino will bring out a gambling addiction. Is that any different from having stores such as Dirt Cheap or alcohol available in Schnucks or Walmart? Why are you not raising questions on the fact that alcohol sales in this area are contributing to others' alcohol addictions, or even fatty foods in stores or restaurants contributing to obese citizens? Everyone has a choice in what they do. If you don't like the casino and it opens in Cape Girardeau, then don't go.
TO the waiter who said that a $1 tip on a $10 bill indicates the server did something wrong, let me remind you that 10 percent is normal for average service. So if I leave only 10 percent, that means you did an OK job but nothing great. If you want more than 10 percent, you're going to have to give me above-average service. A tip is earned.
