I KEEP hearing from some people that the 2008 elections will allow the people to take back America. What in the world does that mean? And who are we taking the country back from? The Republicans occupy the White House, and the Democrats control the legislative branch. I'd love to see some of these Speak Out callers stop spouting cliches they've heard from whoever they blindly follow and explain themselves.
BUYING "MADE in U.S.A." products has the effect of less crime in America. If Americans are working they may not be as likely to resort to crime. Buying products made somewhere else sentences Americans to an alternate course that could lead to crime. Crime often leads to violence.
IF THE majority of Americans were ever able to toss out the Republican-versus-Democrat mindsets, there might be major improvements in our country. Our two major political parties have most of us so brainwashed it is pathetic.
NATHAN COOPER broke the law not because he is a Republican, but because he is a human. U.S. Rep. Bill Jefferson broke the law, but not because he is a Democrat. President Clinton acted like a randy school boy in the White House, but not because he is a Democrat. Get off the party bandwagon.
AN EXCELLENT principal should always win an educator-of-the-year award compared to an excellent teacher, because the principal has to see and deal with the big picture, not just a little bailiwick.
IF THERE is no sidewalk available along a street, pedestrians may run or walk on a street to get to their destination. It is safest for the pedestrian to run or walk as far to the left of the street as possible. This way, there may be time to react if an inconsiderate motorist fails to slow down or move over. It would be wonderful if a sidewalk would be built along each street, but until then the streets must be shared by motorists and pedestrians.
CONGRATULATIONS TO the Jackson High School band and fall athletic teams for their dedication during this heat wave. The directors and coaches have set an excellent example by getting their work done while realizing the potential dangers of the heat and adjusting their practices accordingly. I'm glad my children involved in these programs feel prepared, tough and well-cared-for.
