MEXICAN CROWDS booed Miss USA in the Miss Universe pageant. With good friends like this, who needs enemies?
I WAS appalled to read about CHAMPS on your front page. We in Perry County don't need or deserve another sales tax on top of what we have to live with now. CHAMPS did not get funded because it had a startup grant and was supposed to become self-sufficient. That's not going to happen when the public trough is available. We don't need another group of nonprofessionals doing what the public schools already do. If there is such a need, why not rely on the professionals like Boys and Girls Club in Perryville? To have to fund people who want a free ride by attaching their needs -- not the county's needs -- to older people's issues like Meals on Wheels is reprehensible.
CAN SOMEONE please fix the pothole on William Street in front of Fred's? It is the size of the Grand Canyon. Ever since I hit it my car has been grinding. Is someone going to pay for that to be fixed? Why can't we fix our roads?
"GOD'S ANSWER" is the biggest piece of irresponsible trash I've seen in quite a while in this joke of a newspaper. What sane person really thinks God (if one exists) had anything to do with school shootings? Shouldn't we, as a society, take responsibility for our own actions? Is it possible that our intolerance of others and their beliefs may be the root cause for some of these horrible tragedies? As the division between the haves and the have-nots becomes wider, the animosity between them grows as well. In nearly every school-shooting incident, the assailant is either poor or regarded as an outcast while many of the victims are privileged and popular. Rather than blame religion, or a lack thereof, why not blame the lack of tolerance and lack inclusion that has dominated our culture for so many years? If we don't start taking care of the underprivileged in this country, things are really going to get ugly. I would suggest we stop printing unfounded garbage in our Ann Coulter-loving newspapers and start reaching out to those who are less fortunate than others.
THANK YOU, Southeast Missourian, for adding the column each Saturday by Rob Hurtgen. I look forward to this each week.
WEB SITES like breitbat.com are so obscure, a caller who suggests checking out a news story on the site must immediately be considered to be in the category of those with too much time on their hands and desperate to find Web sites justifying their ever-growing, eccentric radicalism.
SOMEONE SEEMS to think that even though there was no formal declaration of war in Iraq, we should surrender to someone if we pull out the troops. A comment demanded to know to whom we should surrender. I have given this considerable thought. I think the surrender should be to select U.S. spokespeople representing the overwhelming majority of Americans opposing the war in Iraq. Just a group of ordinary Americans chosen at random would do.
NOBODY IS madder about the high gasoline prices than I am. I am a single working mother of three children, but I am tired of reading Speak Out comments about gas prices. There is nothing we can do about it unless everybody wants to ride a bike and not use gas.
