Please repair our main streets. Several main streets that run through Cape Girardeau that almost everyone has to use daily are badly in need of repairs. This has not happened overnight, but has been caused from several years of neglect on the city's part. You want people to visit our city and swerve around pot holes or the speed bumps made by the city because their employees not knowing how to patch potholes? When I drive on Lexington Avenue, Bertling Street, North West End Boulevard, etc., it is like driving in a war zone. I see the city is repairing residential streets this summer. That is good, but I think that the main streets need to be taken care of first.
The casino is reportedly bringing in millions of dollars for Cape Girardeau. Why not offer grants to elderly homeowners to paint or improve their homes? A little bit of paint would go along way in some areas of the city and could kickstart other improvements. (Landlords not included.) Have the owners match the funds or more.
So glad to hear about the four candidates for governor having a debate on television. This debate was aired only in St. Louis and Kansas City. I guess the candidates figured "out state" Missourians were either too ignorant or uninterested in what their plans were to have it televised or to schedule debates in the "out state" areas. By the way, did you know most Missourians don't live in the two burgs to the north? On second thought, considering most of the candidates, it may have been a blessing in disguise.
This article I read made me curious. Part of it dealt with the pressure on public high schools to raise their graduation rate. And yet, when it comes to colleges and universities, there is little if any accountability. That got me to wondering. Assuming the data is available over, say, the last 10 years, what percentage of students who entered SEMO graduated?
It can't come soon enough. Judgment Day may be fast approaching for for-profit colleges and universities. Most students end up worse off than if they had never enrolled in those institutions in the first place.
Re: The new police station. What are the plans for the old police station?
