Reasons to oppose

ON A recent radio program, the presiding commissioner and a committee member said it is just a small group of people who are speaking out against planning and zoning and insinuating that we are just rednecks. I am not sure how they define rednecks. We are farmers, businessman, housewives, government workers, construction workers, teachers, senior citizens and the like. We have invested our time and money to try to get the word out that planning and zoning is not good for Cape County for many reasons. These include increased taxes for both city and county residents, restrictions on starting and continuing small businesses, restrictions on mobile homes and houses in the county and on and on. Personally I don't want a whole new bureaucracy in Cape County where the lives and livelihood of the many will be regulated by the few who would be appointed not elected. This would lead to the good-old-boy system and money under the table. Please consider these and other concerns that we have tried to get out to the public and vote no on planning and zoning. If this makes me a redneck, so be it.

Let's give it a try

FRANK STOFFREGEN'S guest column, "Automated policing isn't that great." certainly does give one pause when thinking about putting these cameras in. Nevertheless just last night when I was trying to cross Kingshighway a car rolled through when I had the green light. I want to give these cameras a try. If we've got problems, then we will see what those are. We will see whether they are worse or not.

Abortion still an issue

AS WE were discussing the governor's death and politics, my friend became very angry when I mentioned abortion. I remarked I have sympathy and sadness for the family of the governor, his son and friend and hope the family can find peace dealing with this terrible loss. I think it brings us closer to the reality of how fragile, short and precious life is and how we should be thankful for the gift of life. My friend asked how I could talk about the abortion issue at this time when the governor was killed in an accident. Because they are both tragedies. How many babies were killed yesterday, today and tomorrow? How can you say one life is more precious than another? God bless them all, and forgive us too.

We'll need more prisons

I WAS watching the debate with the two presidential candidates. I would just like to say that if the Republicans get in office they better be prepared to build twice as many prisons as they are preparing to build.

Dishonor to servicemen

THIS WAS just shown on C-SPAN. Albright and Clinton demanded that the Voice of America not commemorate the dead soldiers of the USS Cole claiming it would offend Palestine, which lost 100 people. This is a crime against our honorable servicemen. Al Gore should have to answer for his despicable administration's denial of reverence for these dedicated sailors. This should be broadcast throughout our nation, and we should demand that these deceased sailors be honored. The arrogance of this administration is just a nightmare.

Still gets my vote

I WOULD just like to say that I was saddened by the death of Mel Carnahan. I was planing on voting for him this election based on what I had heard in the campaign. I would just like to say I am happy Ashcroft decided to suspend his campaign advertising, but what else could he have done in this situation? So let's not pat him on the back too much. It was something that he had to do. I would also like to say if anyone who is going to vote for Carnahan, I am still going to vote for him. I will not just do it because of his memory, but whomever they appoint to take his place would have the same ideas of what he had. Call me crazy, but I am still going to vote for the man, because I think that is the right think to do. If you were going to vote for him before, I encourage you to vote for him anyway in his memory.
