THE "PLAYING God" argument against stem-cell research is just ridiculous. By this argument we should abandon all doctors, hospitals and pills. There would be no emergency crews to rescue you after a car accident, no radiation therapy for cancer, no firefighters to save your house from a blaze. We play God every day of our lives, and stem-cell research is just another way we try to prolong our life here on Earth.
I DON'T really understand the neighborhood's opposition to the church that wants to expand. I live in an area that's kind of close to a commercial part of town, and I would be very pleased if I lived close to a church. If the church doesn't develop that property, I'm concerned that some other corporation will come in and buy it and put in a mini-mall. Then the neighbors will really be unhappy.
I HOPE the teen-agers who are having so much fun ringing doorbells and pounding on doors in the Kenneth Street area after midnight will have as much fun when they appear before a judge and try to get him to see the humor in it.
YOU PEOPLE who are signing a petition against our church are not being fair, unless you first come and get to know us.
THE WIFE and I would like to thank the lady for finding and turning in my wife's purse at Dairy Queen. It proves that there are honest people still around. Thanks again.
ABOUT THE church bells ringing in Advance: I think the people complaining should be thankful that they are not hearing sirens or car stereos blaring instead of the beautiful bells.
THE REASON country-western music is booked for fairs and rodeos is because fairs have traditionally been a place for farmers to bring their best livestock, quilts and baked goods to be judged. Rodeos are about horses, cowboys and calf roping. Many country people love rock music too, but it just doesn't fit the fair or rodeo any more than country music belongs at a rock concert.
LET'S TALK about stalking laws. I don't read a whole lot about this in the paper. I went to the post office to retrieve a letter. A man in a two-door car followed me. As soon as I left the post office he said, "Did you get the letter?" So I hurried up and got into my car and locked it real fast. I made sure that he left before I did. I want this guy to know I wrote down his license-plate number. If I see him following me again, I'm going to turn him in.
IN REGARD to the church bells in Advance, Mo. Some people refer to it as annoying. I live only a few houses away from the church, and I'd rather hear the church bells rather than the loud music coming from the young kids' cars and their squealing tires. That's what's wrong with our country today. We're letting the children run it rather than let the church help us.
A SPEAK Out caller says he prefers Bill Clinton over George W. Bush any day anytime. Would the caller be comfortable having his mother, wife or daughter in a private meeting with Clinton? With this caller's obvious disregard for character, he probably couldn't care less.
IT SAYS in the paper that the fate of the city's River Campus taxes are uncertain. I think the city should split the money up between the fire department and the police department. Goodness knows both departments need equipment. They need to give their people some raises. We have our city people woefully understaffed. If there is any way we can give them these things, it should be done soon.
I MUST respond to the intimidation and whining comments in Speak Out recently belittling those who voted against yet another tax increase for Jackson. Why do teachers in schools think they should have a bottomless pit when it comes to raises? Who working in the private sector can demand a raise every time they turn around? I'd like to see teachers survive on what staff and medical offices and nursing homes and other businesses work for. You get to retire at least on nearly as much as you made working. We have little to nothing when it comes to retiring. Teachers, quit your whining and crying about your poor pay. If you don't like it, get out and join the real world.
I'M RESPONDING to the article about the Perry County School District and its financial troubles. I am a member of the Catholic community who has always supported the district. I have always voted in support of the tax increases, even though I choose to send my children to the Catholic school. When the superintendent and others blame our Catholic community for the voters not supporting these increases, it is insulting to me and all of the other parents who work hard to support both schools.
I THINK our president was very smart to figure out a way to continue stem-cell research through umbilical cords and other means without killing any more new embryos. He has found a way to be compassionate without killing people. But where in the Constitution does it say he can spend our money on research?
A SPEAK Out caller misinterpreted the intent of Robert Lucas, saying he was putting down homosexuals and how, using legal loopholes, the gay community has pushed its agenda of acceptance as a lifestyle, which is denounced in the Bible as an abomination. Closing your eyes to this abomination and saying it's a lifestyle is almost a norm for political parties and civil rights groups. We should show compassion for the sinner but not promote the sin.
I TOLD people years ago when they said what they did in their own bedroom was their own business that it meant they had an agenda. I can't understand how Congress can give these people special rights for what they do in their bedroom. What happened to the good old days when what a person did in his own bedroom really was his own business. But these people don't want to do it that way. They want to force it down the throats of their kids. No wonder America is teed off at these groups. Look at how many tax dollars are paid for to hand out pamphlets to kindergarten kids on how to have sex with a man. One thing Bill Clinton showed me was how many false churches there are in the United States. I never realized it until I started to see all of this moral decay.
I SEE where the city has been reading between the lines again. I do not recall anywhere where the businesses that have been paying the hotel-motel tax asked to have it returned to them. I'm sure they would all agree it could be spent on something that everyone could enjoy, not just the college.
I THINK some recognition needs to be given to the Heartland National 12-and-under girls fast-pitch team that finished fifth in the nation. The team just came back from Pine Bluff, Ark., and I don't think they got the recognition they deserve. We are proud of them all, especially Casey Menz, who was picked for the All-World Series team. Aranda Schlosser and Kately Hughes won Golden Glove awards and others won the MVP for each game played. They played good, played some tough teams and we are proud of them. We are proud that they are from the Heartland, and I think they deserve a little more recognition than what they received.
