YOU DON'T sell school taxes by appealing to the consciences of the citizens concerning the impact the failure to pass said tax will have on the children. You must convince the voting public that the passage of a school tax will be of economic benefit to those living within the school district. Period. End of story.
TO CALL Bill Clinton a "creep" shows about as much intelligence as calling George W. Bush a "genius." If it's OK with you, I will take Clinton any day, anytime.
CHRISTINE STEPHENS' brave new world scenarios are an insult to the intelligence of the American people. She would have us believe we are incapable of making moral distinctions necessary to keep our culture from going to hell in a handbasket. As a society, we Americans have been making difficult moral decisions for a long time. That some of our choices displease the didactic Stephens should neither demoralize nor deter us from the confidence we have to make the collective decisions that have and will continue to make this the greatest country in the world.
WHAT A wonderful evening spent at the Relay for Life at Capaha Park remembering those who have passed on from cancer. I just want to thank the planning committee for its efforts and all the hard work. The only thing that needs to be added is more bathroom facilities both for walkers and survivors.
I HAD to respond to the person who wished he had gone into law enforcement because of all the fringe benefits. I can't believe the attitude of people regarding our law enforcement officers. Why would you think that getting your house paid for, help with education for your children, groceries, emergencies and help with funerals to be great job benefits? Don't you understand the reason these people received this help is because a family member was killed in the line of duty? I am sure the wives and children would much rather have their husband and father bringing home a paycheck and being alive than having to rely on help to see them through. I am glad to see these survivors are being helped.
NO, WE don't have faith in the school board. The bond issue passed because we wanted the best for our children. If it had been to show support for the school board, it would not have passed.
I AGREE with Mark Daumbach's letter that some of Jackson's voters seek to punish the school board by voting no on levy increases and bond issues. I don't know how to change their minds. But if the school board is the obstacle to getting a levy passed, I would respectfully ask those board members to step down for the sake of our children.
THERE IS an increasing problem with barking dogs in the Northfield subdivision. A few inconsiderate people have taken away the peace and quiet of this neighborhood. Barking dogs should be kept inside, especially during sleeping hours.
THIS IS in response to the comment that alluded to the fact that Jackson has been very proud of its school system and now the time of excellence has passed to Cape. I'm a Jackson resident, and I think it's a fair statement that perhaps we have been a smug little town, duly and unduly proud. Perhaps we're being humbled. But we also have the leadership at the helm in the schools now. With good leadership and involved citizens, we can improve what's gone downhill. Give Dr. Ron Anderson and his wonderful staff the chance they deserve. I hope all of Jackson will show them their support, and I hope the parents and teachers will work together effectively to make this a better place to live.
I have little respect for those who show their dissatisfaction by quitting. Those who truly want to change the system hang in there and fight to change it. I hope the school board will reassess its tactics and motives in future issues. The Randie Fidler issue is old news. Right or wrong, it's a dead issue. But we all can learn from it.
I HAVE grandchildren, and I love every one of them with all my heart. I'm sorry to say this, but an embryo in the womb is not life. Life begins when the baby can live and breathe on its own outside the womb. While it's inside the mother, it's just a leech. I'm sorry to call it that, but that's what it is, because it lives off of the mother.
