I THINK the owner of the field of crosses across Highway I-55 needs to put up 10,000 more crosses. Why? That's two crosses for every woman who is so irresponsible that she creates a child and decides to murder her baby as the result of an abortion. That problem is a lot like AIDS. It's preventable.
IF THERE were ever any doubt in the minds of voters that the Bushes would represent corporate interests rather than the human health interests, the announcement by John Ashcroft that he would try to settle the tobacco case out of court, should eliminate it. This action clearly belies an executive committed to promoting pollution, disease and even death if this serves the interests of the corporations that bought the presidency.
THEY DECIDED the Cardinals are going to get their stadium. I think the high-priced players should pay for it. I don't think any of our tax money -- not one penny -- should go for a stadium for these millionaire players.
BOTH DEMOCRATS and Republicans showed their disdain for the majority of Missouri's voters by not having a vote on the funding part of the Cardinals' stadium. How ridiculous and unfair this is. How many businesses do you know that are subsidized by a tax on citizens? If you want to pay for these ball players, let it be voluntarily. But don't leave out the people who don't care about it. This stinks.
IN THE June issue of Missouri Legion magazine, the chaplain writes that the American Legion organization has pledged service for God and country, thus emphasizing the spiritual foundations of our freedom. We are dedicated to preserving our national freedom by holding before the American people these spiritual foundations. Reaffirmation of faith in God and humble reliance on divine providence was characteristic of the Founders of our great nation. It is a solemn duty of each of us to maintain this same faith and rekindle the spirit of reliance upon us and in every generation that follows us. That great general and president, Dwight D. Eisenhower, said, "Men grow in stature only as they daily rededicate themselves to an old faith. Faith is our surest strength, our greatest resource." To which I say: Amen.
I KNOW how the Taste Lounge can get its liquor license back. It's very easy. The Taste clientele should find out where the city council members go to drink and start going there. It wouldn't be long before the Taste would have its license back again.
THE CITY council has done it now. They've revoked the license of the Taste Lounge. At 2 a.m. in the morning, while the honest people are asleep you know, the people who work and pay taxes the patrons of the Taste Lounge are still out in the street costing the police overtime pay.
MY RESPONSE is to the recent African American caller. He's wrong in saying blacks commit more crimes than whites do in this country, but the facts state that the percentage of blacks who commit crimes is higher than the percentage of whites who commit crimes.
MY SON has been in a Cape Girardeau residential-care home for four years. I'm unable to handle his affairs. During that time, the former public administrator hasn't seen or spoken to him. In Wednesday's paper, it said, "He always has had the interests of his wards in mind." That's not true.
A MESSAGE to Gov. Bob Holden: I do not want my tax money paying for a new St. Louis Cardinals stadium. There are many other projects that would benefit all in Missouri.
SINCE THE Cardinals said they're moving to Illinois, I understand the Missouri elected officials have said they'll help them out. We don't really need to pay $100 million for a new stadium when the Cardinals already have a wonderful stadium. It's almost always full. They have more fans come than almost any other team, and they don't need a new stadium. Why should Missouri put out $100 million for something we don't really need or deserve to pay for?
I'M CALLING in regard to the city council taking the license of the Taste Lounge. This is unfair because they're punishing this man for running a business. The problem is the congregation of people outside his bar. If said people lose their meeting place, it's their own fault. If there are no fights and people don't congregate, they wouldn't have lost the Taste and they would have a place to gather.
I AM glad to hear that the roundabout is going to be changed a little. The corners are too sharp. Also, the concrete ledges were made too wide. They should be narrower.
THE HISTORICAL record is clear: America was built on Christian principles. What has happened to America since the Christian principles were removed from public life, starting in 1962, especially the removal from schools? SAT scores decreased 10 percent. Teen suicide increased 450 percent. Child abuse increased 2,300 percent. Illegal drugs increased 6,000 percent. Criminal arrest of teen-agers increased 150 percent. Divorce increased 350 percent. Births to unwed mothers increased 500 percent. It looks like it may be to our advantage to restore the Christian principles that our Founding Fathers left us before we go down the tube and become another socially misfit country like so many of the European countries have become.
REGARDING THE proposed power plant in West Cape County: Our county commissioners, Kinder Morgan Power Co. and Peter Kinder are fighting the Department of Natural Resources to waive air-pollution emission standards. The prevailing winds come from the west, southwest and northwest and blow eastward. Wake up to smog, Cape and Jackson.
I WONDER what Gov. Bob Holden will get in return for endorsing the new St. Louis Cardinals stadium. It's pitiful.
I AM against the Patient's Bill of Rights in Congress. I am the patient. I pay my own insurance -- $820 a month -- for my family. If the bill is passed, it will go up $150 a month because of the right to sue. Of course, doctors, hospitals and drug companies want it. Doctors and hospitals can run many unnecessary tests, and drug companies will benefit. The most benefits will be for trial lawyers. HMOs were urged by Congress a few years ago to hold down costs. Now, they are the nasty old HMOs. Trial lawyers are being repaid for the big donations. We are the patients, and we pay the bills. We don't like the Patient's Bill of Rights. It is not in our interests as patients.
I JUST heard the report about a woman who drowned her children who ranged from 6 months of age to 7 years of age. The final sentence of the report was that the mother "could face the death penalty." "Could" is not a good comment. I think "should" is a better word. I know many people oppose the death penalty, and I respect their rights to believe that. I'm glad they can voice their opinions on that. But for those who describe the death penalty as being barbaric, I think "barbaric" better describes a mother who could drown five children or a man who could shoot a state trooper on a routine traffic stop or someone who could bomb a federal building and kill 168 people and call the dead children their "collateral damage."
