Where's that tower?

I SEE where half of the world's languages face extinction by 2100 as more and more people begin to speak a common language. This is good. Maybe now we can get back to work on that tower.

Social Security thievery

AS THE Social Security debate begins, I am amazed at the large number of uninformed people who don't want Social Security changed. How in the world can Social Security be considered a good deal when the average person retiring after 1994 will receive less in benefits than they contributed through their working years? Even retired Democratic Sen. Patrick Moynihan characterized Social Security taxes as outright thievery from working people, yet these geniuses continue to praise Social Security in its present form. I guess ignorance is bliss.

Don't like dog mess

I THINK it's about time Jackson does something with the dogs. People walk their dogs and let them mess in your yard, but they do not clean it up. How come some states have a rule and a fine if dogs mess in your yard? There are dogs running loose. Sometimes you see as many as three dogs out there playing in your yard, and you don't even have a dog. I love a beautiful yard. And I can't have it if dogs are going come in and wet on my shrubs.

Dissent on Clinton

SOME DEMOCRAT still calls Speak Out and wishes he still had Bill Clinton in office as a role model for children and our country. Many people, even many Democrats, didn't agree with his devious character, adultery and dishonesty in our highest office.

Tragic percentage

THE CALLER who said, "Get the statistics right about the black percentage of crime compared to others," should check the statistics and report it to the Missourian. He will be more shocked than ever. The percentage of blacks in prison, compared to their population, is a tragedy in the black community.

Neighborhood bar

IT'S A real shame the city council finally got what it wanted, and that was to close the Taste Lounge. Most of the Taste's customers don't have a car, and that's a neighborhood bar. They go and associate with their friends and neighbors and talk. And there's not much that goes on. Once in a while there are some things outside. If the city council has the power to do that, what is to prevent it from making people move out of their own homes because of trouble out on the street? I think people respect their boundaries.

God's in charge

I DON'T believe in global warming because I believe in God. In the first chapter and verse of Genesis, it states, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth." God will help us to do our part in keeping the air clean, but we can't ruin our economy. I would suggest reading the Bible and trusting God. Don't run around like Chicken Little saying the sky is falling.

It's about time

I'M GLAD the Cape Girardeau City Council finally had the backbone to pull the liquor license of the Taste Lounge. That bar has been a thorn in the side of this community since it opened. It is taking up much more of the police officers' time, especially on weekends, than is proportionate to the rest of the community, leaving other areas of the community unprotected. It's about time the city council protected the police officers by putting a stop to such a dangerous business.

Need friendly police

FROM OBSERVATION, I'd say that the Cape Girardeau Police Department has dropped the slogan "To serve and protect" for "To ticket and collect." Cape needs fewer ticket writers and more public servants to provide friendly interaction in the community.

Gets stadium, not vote

PETER KINDER can have his baseball stadium, but he won't be getting my vote in the next election. He's a very big disappointment.
