MY DAUGHTER goes to Central Junior High School. She brought her yearbook home a week ago or so. We were looking through it, and I noticed all these clubs and groups are included in the yearbook, and even the cheerleaders for next year are listed in the back. However, the only club on campus that recognizes academic achievement, Beta Club, is not in the yearbook. Is there some reason that the only academic club in the whole school is left out of the yearbook? I think whoever did this needs to answer that question. Maybe it was just an oversight. But let's make sure it's included in the future. The students who make Beta Club deserve just as much recognition as those kids who play sports and other things.
TO THE people in Speak Out who have the roundabout on the brain, chill out. Just don't drive that way. It's out of the way to most people's destination anyway. Stop complaining about something so trivial. Use it, or take another route.
I CAN'T understand the Republicans getting upset about Jim Jefferds changing from Republican to independent. It's no problem. After all, we've got a president that's a uniter, not a divider. He brings people together. And he has compassion. So don't worry, Republicans. The right man is in office, right?
CONCERNING THE new bingo hall. Thank goodness they're going to put in a glass wall for smokers and nonsmokers. Then maybe part of us will be able to breathe. The reason people smoke during bingo is because they're addicted to cigarettes. We don't want to hear people saying that. But people don't quit smoking for the fun of it. They smoke because they have to. Let's think about that.
IT'S FINALLY dawned on me why the people of Cape Girardeau don't like the roundabout. What do you expect from a city whose drivers think the left-turn lane is an on-ramp?
TO THOSE who think we are no better than Japan because we bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in response to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor: Remember one thing. We bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki when we were at war. Japan attacked us when we were at peace, and when their emissaries were in Washington trying to negotiate peace. There's a big difference.
BRAVO TO Kathy Parsons for her recent letter to the editor. She pointed out that south Cape Girardeau isn't the only part of town where there are problems with nuisance neighbors. I can fully understand where she's coming from. I live close to Central High School, and we have problems with speeding, trash in our yard and loud neighbors in front of our house using foul language early in the morning. I'm not sure what the city council is going to do to alleviate this problem. At this point, it seems all they're doing is targeting problems on the south side of town.
THANK YOU, B. Ray Owen, for the positive article on Cairo. After such negative press and derogatory view in other newspapers, it was nice to read your understanding piece. A kind word goes a long way.
ABOUT PEARL Harbor: Are you old enough to remember when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor? Are you old enough to remember that the Japanese had submarines off the coast of California? Did you know there were Japanese sympathizers in our nation at that time, but you didn't always know who they were? Do I think it was fair to compensate these people who spent time in interment camps? Yes, I do. But don't pass judgment on something you probably didn't live through.
I AM a quadriplegic who was injured when I was 19 years old. I'm 37 now. I agree completely with Christine Stephens' views. I don't want a cure for my paralysis at the expense of an unborn baby. I'd think more of Christopher Reeve and Michael J. Fox if they accepted their handicaps with courage rather than expecting to use fetuses to regain their entry into an able-bodied world.
