ONE OF the almighty Bush clan, Jeb, has fully endorsed the building of a new stadium for the Marlins in Florida. Now that a Republican says its OK, does this mean people in this area will do an about-face on our own stadium issue?
DAVID LIMBAUGH'S book signing was a wonderful event and overwhelming success. I should know. I was there. It couldn't happen to a nicer guy. I have a stunning revelation for you. Most of those who came to the book signing were Republicans.
IT'S GREAT that we finally have a president working so hard to keep all his campaign promises. The problem is that the majority of America voted against those promises.
I LOVE the roundabout. It's so much better than a four-way stop. I can simply slow down and continue through the intersection. Stop signs would be horrible there, especially with the potential for a traffic jam back onto Route K once the extension from Silver Springs Road is open. They built the thing too small. But it's still better than a four-way stop. Please don't put a four-way stop there.
WE ALLOWED two men who sell oil for a living -- one made over $36 million last year -- to take the highest offices in the land, and now people are surprised to find gas prices will be at record highs this summer. The best solution they can come up with? Find more oil. For all of those out there supporting Bush, I don't want to hear you complain. This is your fault.
I WAS just wondering, does SEMO pay people to speak at graduations? The speaker at SEMO's graduation completely missed the point. Instead of talking to the students about graduating and moving on with their lives, he gave a history lesson. I don't think the students wanted to hear about relations between the United States and China.
IT IS irresponsible of the Southeast Missourian to declare Iraq and China as greater threats to the United States than the Soviet Union was. This is grossly overstated and mostly unfounded. It is also irresponsible to think that Russia, now our friend and ally, would still be "pointing missiles at us." These are scare tactics and propaganda for an unnecessary and fiscally unsound defense plan that will create more problems than it will fix.
I DON'T think people who display their Confederate flags are narrow-minded, ignorant or racist. Our area is rich in Civil War history. Much of it is Union. But there is a lot of Southern history here as well. To name a few places: Jackson cemetery, where Confederate Col. William Jeffers' monument stands at the entrance. New Madrid, where the Confederacy defended Island No. 10. Belmont, Mo.-Columbus, Ky. Being proud of who you are and where you are from is not narrow-minded. I am proud of who I am.
I HAVE a minor disagreement with an editorial view you recently expressed. You wrote that a missile-protection shield is a prudent defense. I say the money spent to construct it will require abandoning our ability to fight a two-front war, never work, inadvertently trigger World War III and, as a result, render homo sapiens extinct.
I DO not believe it is fair that you selected Cape, Jackson and Notre Dame's proms for photos in the newspaper. It is very aggravating because these schools are always given more attention than the other schools in this area like Chaffee, Scott City, Oran and Kelly. If you are going to print one school's pictures, get pictures from all of them.
