Cleanup in McClure

THERE WAS a cleanup day in Cape. I think it is very nice to get things cleaned out around your house. I think it is time to clean up the McClure, Ill., area. When you drive through that town, the first thing you see is all the rundown houses and junk and weeds grown around the houses. It is a disgrace to the town. How much better would the main street look if those old houses were out of there and the others cleaned up. It would just take a little work for the property owners. It's time for a clean up.

Evaluating professors

I TOTALLY agree with the caller who said he has a professor at SEMO who doesn't want to teach his class. I'm in my fourth year, and I have run across so many professors who do not want to teach. I'm there to learn. It would be nice if the professors were there to teach. The evaluations the students fill out at the end of the semester should be worded differently. They are written so you cannot really give a bad evaluation. Some of the teachers I've had do deserve a bad one.

Beware of coyotes

ALL THOSE who live along Walker branch, especially the part with the concrete base in it, should be very careful because there are coyotes that prowl there. Let's face it, small dogs and cats make very good coyote chow.

Bibles in schools

I WOULD like to make a comment about these kids who are being expelled from school for bringing pocket knives. If you want to get expelled really fast, bring a Bible.

Maybe he cares

I'M RESPONDING to the person who said the president looks like a mule eating briars when he's around children. Maybe he just really enjoys children's company and cares about their education.

Funny columns

ABOUT HEIDI'S April 17 column: I cannot believe that anybody thinks what Heidi Hall says is offensive. She is hilarious. I enjoy her and have met her. She is a wonderful, caring human being. Give her a break. She works hard and writes very funny columns. Thank you, Heidi.

Go after the teams

MOST CITIES with arenas the size of the Show Me Center want teams to come in while the Show Me Center is turning teams away. No wonder the Show Me Center is losing money each year. The citizens of Cape Girardeau should decide whether minor leagues come to town, not the director of the Show Me Center.

Concern for players

I AM a parent of one of the Notre Dame baseball players injured when their vehicle was forced off the road. I want to publicly thank the emergency workers who responded to the accident, the medical staff at St. Francis Medical Center who treated the boys and the Notre Dame teammates, coaches, students, administrators, relatives and friends who came to the emergency room to express their concern and support. I am especially grateful to Brother David whose words of comfort lifted the spirits of the boys and their worried parents. I also want to thank the members of the Central High School baseball team who came to the hospital.

Not for the workers

IF THE Republican Party is for the working man, then all I have to say is, "By the fruits, ye shall know them." The senior President Bush vetoed the extension of unemployment insurance and vetoed the Family Leave Act. If it's a tax break for the working people, then it's a higher bracket tax. There's something in it for the rich man or they would not want to refund your taxes. No way possible you could say the current President Bush is for the working man.
