No quick fix

BEFORE the last presidential election, it was evident that the mounting economic crisis would require years, not months, for recovery. It's amazing how angry people have become because the White House and Congress haven't waved a magic wand to make problems go away. Any real solution takes time. The Great Depression took nearly a decade from which to recover. Since the current downward plunge in employment began in 2008, we'd be fortunate to see any improvement by the end of this year. Survival of fittest

IF Social Security and Medicare are cut off as Ron Paul and other Republicans would like to see, we would revert to a state of nature, and survival of the fittest would be restored to its rightful place as the rule by which we human animals should live -- even though, as a great philosopher once said, life could be nasty, brutish and short.

Finding the money

IN response to the comment concerning the school purchasing music stands and textbooks instead of a football stadium: Textbooks and school materials come out of one fund called the operating fund. However, when a school has other expenses, such as a new roof, it must also come out of the operating fund. The schools can only purchase from this fund if the money is there. Repairs to the schools take away from such purchases because the students have to be in a safe environment as well as receive an education. If the bond issue is passed, the money from the bond issue will go into a special fund for the proposed buildings but also for needed repairs. This will free up more money in the operating fund for such things as textbooks, music stands and other school necessities.
