City's to-do list

DO any other taxpayers in Cape Girardeau feel like we've been tricked again? The city is building a lavish water park. Now that it's half-finished, city officials tell us, "Oh, we need a new sanitation plant. Our sewers are going to get stopped up if we don't clean up our sanitation." And we have a federal mandate to do it. Why didn't they tell us we need a new sanitation plant before we built the water park? That's like buying a fishing boat when you know you need to fix the roof on your house. You do the things you have to do first. Then you take care of the fun stuff.

Proper venue

THE proper venue for Foreigner in Cape Girardeau would be the Show Me Center or the Osage Community Centre. I don't know what the Carson Center in Paducah allows, but I don't think beer drinking would be good in the River Campus auditorium. I would want the seats kept nice. When we have people drinking and beer and acting like fools, that's not good. That's what is good about the Show Me Center. Those seats wipe off. It would be nice if a group like Foreigner could come to Cape Girardeau at least one time. We don't have enough going on downtown. It's a shame the barge with the music didn't work out. I enjoyed it. Now that Cape Girardeau has grown even more, maybe the promoter should try again.

Force savings

SINCE we have a problem with Social Security not being funded in the future, a legislative mandate to force workers to save money in an account for retirement might alleviate unemployment. We might not have a problem with unemployment in the future if this were done.

Drugs and welfare

I'M pleased to see that we finally have a bill to prohibit drug users from receiving welfare checks. If the money would dry up, the drugs might dry up, too. It's high time we stop rewarding people for such awful behavior.

Teen pregnancy

I see where the teenage pregnancy rate is up again. It incenses me. There is absolutely no excuse for this trend in this day and age. Stop and think, girls. You're not doing this baby any favor by bringing it into the world with no father and no financial means to support it. It's time this is stopped.

Necessities first

I just read in the paper the city must build a sewage treatment plant at a cost of $73 million. The city's last permit issued in 2006 called for the replacement of the plant by October 2009. I can't believe the city is building a water park but this sewage plant is on hold. Where are the priorities? We need a city government that will put necessities before luxuries.
