** Food prices

It is wonderful that gas prices are down. But what's also overpriced is food. I mean, $7 for hamburger meat? I have left the grocery shopping to my spouse for years. So, I was under a state of shock when I walked into a grocery store and actually had to buy some stuff. Compared to the 1980s, I could not believe the prices of food now. I know that boxed cereal had gotten outrageous and other stuff, but I just couldn't believe the price on a package of ground beef or chuck. I was like, "Wow, this is really kind of ridiculous." So if grocery prices could go down now, I think Americans would be very happy people.

** Gene Rhodes

When I was young and dumb, I started to work for Mr. Rhodes. My sister-in-law and daughter also was employed by him. Mr. Rhodes was a very nice person, a good human being and a person who I could respect. We lost a role model and friend.

** Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker died recently. I remember him for many reasons. His rendition of the Beatles' "With a Little Help from My Friends" is one. His duet with John Belushi on "Saturday Night Live" was the greatest segment ever. And his performance at Woodstock was second to none.

** Greek housing

What a wonderful use of taxpayer money: Building Greek housing so that rich kids will have a nice place to have their toga parties.

** Economy, columns

I'm sure it won't happen but, given the dramatic improvement in our economy, the price of gasoline, etc., etc., etc., it would seem to me that those whose columns consistently appear on this page and who have wrongly claimed President Obama is leading this country to ruination should have to eat their words.

** Enjoy the gas

I just read on the front page where the local gas is less than $2 a gallon. Let's don't look a gift horse in the mouth. Enjoy it while we can, because that Trojan horse will appear, and we'll be at $4 or $5 a gallon by the end of the next year. Enjoy while we can, because it will hit us soon.

** Kindness shown

I know we still have a lot of good people on this Earth. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting a kind and generous person. I was loading bags of mulch into my trunk, and this young man asked if he could help. (His kindness was so appreciated.) I didn't get his name. He probably is a kind person who will help at any opportunity. I wish this young man and all who are dear to him for wonderful things to happen in his life and, at this special time of year, I wish him a merry blessings.

** Post office

With Christmas season here, and seeing how we have to mellow things and get things done, all I can tell you is please save the P.O. Please save the post office. The way they're doing things, it's not working. Help, help us.
