Speak Out 10/7/03

LET ME say I have no racial bias. I think all people are created equal and should have equal rights. But the recent fury about Rush Limbaugh's comments is absolutely ridiculous. He is not the first sports announcer or public figure who has gotten into some kind of trouble for making a comment about a black person. As a white person, I am getting tired of it always being OK to criticize us, but if a white person does it it's racist. Limbaugh did not make a racist comment. He made a fair comment that a lot of people agree with but don't have the guts to say on TV.

Totally off base

I THINK Rush Limbaugh's comments were totally off base.

Headed for poorhouse

WE NEED a Republican governor like we need another four years of this nightmare Republican president's administration. We'll all be in the poorhouse.

Proud of the chief

I WOULD just like to congratulate police chief Steve Strong on his selection of police chief of the year. He is well-deserving of this award. He is a chief we can respect and be proud of.

Keeping abreast

THIS IS in regard to everybody whining about moving the Homecomers celebration out of the center of Jackson. If people couldn't wake up to progress, we would still have outdoor toilets, horses and buggies and gas lights. Is that what you want? Get with the flow. Put the celebration out in the park where people can really enjoy it.

Great Chaffee water

I JUST want to give a big thank you to the Chaffee public works department for the fantastic water that we have. I have lived in many towns and have never had such clean and pure water.

Overstaffed crew

CAN ANYBODY tell me why, when our city budget is so short of money, that it took three men to go around putting out no-parking signs? We had one man driving the truck, one man carrying the sign and one man carrying the stick.

Help the businesses

I HAVE a suggestion on the Homecomers issue. Let all the people who don't want Homecomers to move to the park donate a week's salary to the uptown merchants for the business they lose that week.

Support for weapons

I DON'T drink alcohol of any kind, but bravo to Anheuser Busch for supporting the concealed-weapon agenda. Thank you very much.
