DO the Bill Presses and the Keith Olbermanns of this world truly not realize that their comments are as vitriolic and incendiary as any of the comments of those with whom they disagree and are attempting to demonize?...

IF there is a restaurant or gathering place you avoid because of secondhand smoke, send them a note.
Vitriolic comments
DO the Bill Presses and the Keith Olbermanns of this world truly not realize that their comments are as vitriolic and incendiary as any of the comments of those with whom they disagree and are attempting to demonize?
College students vote
STUDENTS from all over our country go to communities for school. During those years, they move their voting registration to that area. During that time they vote on issues that will not affect them when they graduate and move somewhere else. That is their right. What happens to the rights of the permanent residents of that community? The students sway the votes without thinking that come graduation, it won't matter to them anymore.
Patriotic tribute
THE tributes to Sgt. Michael Beckerman on YouTube are something to watch. This young man was given a hero's welcome from the Cape Girardeau airport to his hometown of Ste. Genevieve. I salute those patriots who made this drive to escort him home. God bless Sgt. Beckerman's young family and those that cared enough to pay tribute.
Wood fires
OUR forefathers used campfires and chimney fires to keep warm and cook when there wasn't electricity. And they survived, as did their children and grandchildren. Wood fire is the warmest type of heat. It's better than electric and gas heat. Whenever we go to someone's house who doesn't use wood fire to heat, we freeze and can't wait to get home to our warm house. So think again about banishing all smoke.

Making peace
WE have sent our young soldiers into two countries to bring the people together and make them peaceful countries. In doing so, we have lost a lot of American lives and put burdens on families and their children. With the likes of Limbaugh, Palin and Republicans, we are seeing America become divided. What will the country have to come to for us to make peace here?
Free speech?
Conservatives need to accept the fact that the freedom of speech clause guarantees freedom of speech only for liberals or those to the left of center. It was never meant to apply to conservatives or those right of center.
Medical costs
The members of the middle class in this country are paying higher deductibles to keep premium prices down so they can afford health insurance. They are being hit harder with higher out- of-pocket expenses. They do not have enough deductions to file the long tax form like the rich do. Is it fair when they have to pay out about $2,000 for tests that are not covered by insurance?
Smoking policy option
Recently my husband and I ate in a restaurant in St. Louis, and they informed us that all restaurants were smoke free as of Jan. 1. But they said that if a certain percentage of sales came from alcohol, they could apply for a special permit and could have a smoking section. Why can't Cape Girardeau do something like this?
Partisan attacks
I am so tired of hearing these political attacks lately both from conservatives and liberals. The news and radio programs are so busy bashing the other party that everyone forgets that a little 9-year-old girl and several others were killed recently by a mad gunman. We have a congresswoman with a bullet in her head trying her best to survive. What has to happen for the American people to wake up and start working toward strengthening our economy again, bringing our soldiers back home and start working together to build our nation?
