While Missouri's legislature wrangles with pay increase recommended by a citizens commission for statewide officials, judges and legislators, here is something to keep in mind:

In his State of the State Address today, Gov. Bob Holden is expected to discuss the state's anticipated $300 million-plus shortfall in the current budget.

Given the fact that the state must tighten its belt in order to balance the budget, wouldn't it be sensible to forgo any raises until spending can be brought under control?

Once revenue and spending are back in line, then legislators could debate the merits of the pay commission. This approach would put the horse in front of the cart.
