Last Tuesday was the first day of filing for city and school board seats in Missouri, and it was good to see that a number of candidates wasted no time in doing so across the region.

Candidates have until Jan. 18 to file for the city and school board positions that will be filled in April, and you can be sure many more will declare their candidacy. While few races have yet to develop, they will, and informed voters will watch for filings, know who the candidates are and the issues.

Serving on city councils, boards of aldermen and school boards can be a rewarding job. The hours are long, and pay is virtually nonexistent. For that, voters owe a degree of gratitude to those who are willing to take on the task.
