Without a doubt, Cape Girardeau County Park straddling U.S. 61 near I-55 provides one of the most beautiful entrances any city could want. Now the park is 48 acres larger, which will help meet the growing demand as more and more folks go there for all kinds of activities.

One need is for more shelters, which are used for picnics, family reunions and other functions. Currently the demand for these facilities during the summer often exceeds their availability.

The wooded area that has been added to the park through a $300,000 purchase, is located generally behind the Missouri Conservation Department building in the North Park. It is the first addition to the popular park since 25 acres were purchased in 1993. Altogether the park now covers some 288 acres, including both the North Park and the South Park on the other side of U.S. 61. The county also has Klaus Park on the west side of I-55 and south of U.S. 61.

The Cape Girardeau County Park area includes small lakes, picnic areas and walking trails as well as provided a well-manicured entry to the city from Jackson and I-55. As the park continues to grow in popularity, the additional land will be put to good use.
