To the editor: Changing the name of Southeast Missouri State University's mascot and nickname is the most childish thing I've ever heard. Is changing the name of scholarships named after specific people or street names after cultures, races, states, flowers, trees and specific people next? How can someone be proud of his culture of names used for one thing and then be insulted when a college uses it for a sports theme?...

Political correctness has grown to be ridiculous. Too often it's used as an excuse for people to spout off because they don't feel important or have anything better to do.

This SEMO committee has turned into the same thing the congressional committee has turned into: a committee to further someone's political agenda. Congress has turned its committee from a fact-finding group against terrorism into a finger-pointing, political assault against something that doesn't even exist just to favor the Democrats' presidential race. SEMO's committee is just as selfish and self-centered.

It's insulting enough to know our government thinks American citizens are stupid, but it's even more insulting when an institution like SEMO thinks the same.
