To the Editor:
I was extremely pleased to see so many students participating Tuesday in YELL Day (Youth, Education, Literacy and Learning). The low level of adult literacy and educational attainment in the Southeast Missouri region makes it essential that all of us become involved in efforts to empower people through education.
The YELL Day program, begun three years ago by the Area United Way and the Southeast Missourian newspaper, makes a significant contribution in the fight literacy in our region. The personal involvement in this truly worthwhile cause by so many of our students, who are, after all, members of the Cape Girardeau community, is to be commended.
Southeast students could be seen selling papers throughout the city and across campus. As president of the university, I am proud of those who showed up early in the morning and volunteered their time and effort, thus giving something back to the community in which they live. Who better to understand the importance of education and literacy than those fortunate enough to be attending college?
Former President George Bush once said, "The definition of a successful life must include serving others." Those students who volunteered Tuesday demonstrated their understanding of that definition. Thanks to all who participated!.
