To the editor:
On behalf of all the students of St. Vincent de Paul School, I want to thank you for offering the Southeast Missourian newspaper staff, equipment and materials to us in the project recently completed by our seventh graders. The students in grades two to eight enjoyed reading the articles written by their friends in seventh grade, and the seventh graders themselves were very excited to see their writing in print beside their pictures. Mrs. Debrock remarked that her seventh graders have never been quieter as they scoured the paper for their articles and others of interest.
We appreciate the willingness of the Southeast Missourian newspaper staff to share their expertise with our students. Peggy Scott and Joni Adams helped our students understand the writing process and answered many questions. Mrs. Debrock tells me the students were very interested and well-behaved both then and when they toured the newspaper facility. What that says to me is that the kids saw the value of what was being presented and enjoyed learning about it.
All of this began with Mark Kneer. He couldn't have been more helpful. His efforts to promote your newspaper and his willingness to give of his own time and talent for the sake of our kids is most admirable.
We hope that the students' venture into the world of journalism will be ongoing and that the Southeast Missourian will continue to sponsor our newspaper in the years to come.
