To the editor:

Hats off to the Cape Girardeau Police Department. While tending to a separate act of vandalism adjacent to my business (overturned Coke machine in front of Totally You Salon), they managed also to catch two very inebriated young men uprooting the flowers in front of my business in the wee hours of a recent Sunday morning.

If pulling up my caladium, begonias, fuschias, lantana and brachyome wasn't thrilling enough, they had proceeded to toss them into the street. Close to $100 of carefully selected plants to beautify our downtown were retrieved by the officer on duty who promptly had these scandalous folks replant them.

It was a pity these pranks continue as hardworking business people strive to make our downtown a place for the entire community to take pride in. Yet we are so thankful for the vigilant efforts and protection of our police department. Thanks, guys, for watching out for us all.

And if we can all take pride in not only the efforts to beautify and rebuild our downtown, but also to prevent future acts of degradation, property damage and even respect for mankind, truly downtown Cape will shine in its heritage and glory.
