To the editor:
As an organization that puts the needs of children first, the Cape Girardeau Community Teachers Association proudly supports Phase II of the master plan set forth by the Board of Education. We made a commitment to the children in the district some 81 years ago when the first CTA was formed in Missouri. We now feel the need for growth in the areas of technology and research has caused the district to rethink restructuring of our attendance centers in order to expand the learning environment in these areas to better prepare our children for the 21st century.
The world around us is changing at such a rapid pace, we must re-evaluate the needs of the district and provide room for growth, equipment for technology and facilities conducive for learning. We can be proud of the past: high achievement scores, low dropout rate, increased numbers of students continuing education past high school and strong leadership among those participating in the arts, academics, extracurricular organizations and sports. Now we have been challenged to make a difference in future generations. As teachers we hold their future in our hands. Help us meet that challenge with new opportunities for our most precious responsibility: the children we teach each day. We encourage all citizens to research the facts surrounding the Phase II issue, think of the future and vote yes on April 4 to continue the commitment to our children and their future.
