To the editor:
Have you heard the music in the air every Wednesday morning? It's coming from Central High School. This is marching band season, and I'd like to congratulate the Cape Central Marching Tigers on their first-place finishes the past two weekends. The band has traveled to marching band competitions the past two Saturdays and placed first in its division at both competitions.
Each weekend during the season, the Tigers compete with bands from throughout the state. The band competitions may host as few as 28 bands or as many as 58 bands. Every Saturday that the band travels, the students may have to be at school as early as 7 a.m. and not return home until as late as 1 a.m.
In addition to marching band camp, which runs the first three weeks of August, the students practice every school-day morning and at least three afternoons a week. The band plays at every Central home football game, marches in parades and travels to Saturday competitions.
The 104 students of the band comprise over 10 percent of the Central High School student body, and it is nice to see those hard-working students reaping the rewards of their efforts.
We can take great pride in our marching band as it represents Cape Girardeau in all of its travels.
