It is so easy to complain about the inconveniences and problems that often can be attributed to people who work. When the U.S. standard of living is considered, however, or the way things get done all over the country, it is pretty amazing how well things run. Consider this: When you pick up a telephone and dial a long-distance call, you are connected almost instantly. In other parts of the world, it is often difficult to find a telephone that works, much less one that will give you immediate access to the entire globe. When you purchase an automobile in this country, you can reasonably expect it to run well and, when mechanical problems occur, be repaired with readily available parts. In other areas of the world, automobiles are beyond the reach of the average wage earner, and parts frequently have to be cannabilized from other vehicles. When you eat in a restaurant in this country, whether it is fast food or a leisurely dinner, you can expect good-quality food that is safe to consume at an affordable price. In other countries, there are shortages of foodstuffs, and what is available often is of questionable origin. When you go to the hospital in this country, you can expect the most advanced medical treatment available provided by skilled doctors, nurses and support staff. In some other countries, highly trained medical personnel go wanting for medicine and equipment.
The list could go on and on. This isnt a perfect country, but thanks to the work ethic of Americans we have the highest standard of living and the best of everything from computer games to toilet paper. And most Americans have jobs that allow them to enjoy many of the products and services we take so much for granted.
It is, when you think about it, an amazing accomplishment. We are a nation of laborers who toil some harder than others to produce goods and provide services in abundance.
It is the laborer who is honored each year on Labor Day. It is the conscientious and dependable worker who is held in high esteem on one special day each year.
Labor Day marks the change of a season in the American way of life. It is the end of summer vacation and the start of another work year closely tied to our education system. Labor Day is a time to remember the contributions of all those who work to maintain the high standards of American life.
