Several major projects in Jackson are progressing. Phase one of the E. Main St. extension which will complete the road from Shawnee St. to Oak Hill Rd. is in full swing and is scheduled, weather permitting to be finished by late summer. The intersection of Shawnee and East Main St. will also be improved as a part of this project.
The new bridge on Old Cape road is now complete. The overlay and other finishing touches were recently done. This new bridge is wider, safer and the curve much softer than in the past. We appreciate everyone's patience during the construction of this bridge.
The proposed improvement of Center junction (I-55 & Hwy 61 East interchange) has received the go ahead for a public hearing by the Missouri State Highway Commission. If all goes well this project could be on the agenda for approval by the Highway Commission as early as September. Through the cooperative intergovernmental agreement that is in place this project could hopefully be completed sometime in 2002 instead of 2006 as previously scheduled.
The Jackson Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual banquet. James R. Nelson was the R. A. Fulenwider award winner. Mr. Nelson was a long time teacher and principal at JHS. He also has been active in many local organizations including being a member and past commander of American Legion Post 158. Mr. Nelson continues to be a strong community supporter and friend to everyone in Jackson. The chamber and city also honored Rev. Walter Keisker who just celebrated his 100th birthday. The city of Jackson proclaimed June 21 to be Rev. Walter Keisker day in his honor. His many years of service to our community are very much appreciated.
It was with regret that the council and I recently accepted the resignation of Ward 4 Alderman Fred Leimer. Fred was first elected in 1994 and served the City of Jackson with integrity and Jackson's best interests in mind. Fred's progressive and friendly attitude will be missed. On behalf on the council I want to thank our friend Fred Leimer for his service to Jackson.
The Jackson VFW is celebrating the 100th birthday of the National VFW organization this year. The Jackson VFW which was founded in 1989 is an important part of our growing community.
The Grandview Acres sewer project is now complete. This project took longer than expected to complete and we appreciate the cooperation shown from everyone in Grandview Acres. Needed road repair will be done in two phases with the final overlay being done later this year.
Plans are being finalized for a joint Jackson/Cape Council tour of both Cities facilities. The purpose of this tour will be to learn and exchange ideas that may enable us to do a better job of serving our citizens.
Another outstanding Fourth of July celebration and fireworks display was held in Jackson this year. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this year's event a big success.
