One of the best things about living in Cape Girardeau is the connection many residents have with each other. They see each other at church, while volunteering, on their jobs and at the schools attended by their children.
Organized events also bring neighbors together. Last month, several of these get-togethers occurred on the same weekend:
* Neighborhood Connections drew 300 people to its sixth annual block party on Fountain Street next to May Greene Park.
* Old Town Cape attracted 100 people to its Oktoberfest, a first for the downtown revitalization organization, at the Common Pleas Courthouse Park.
* The Cape River Heritage Museum was the host for a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
* The Cape Girardeau Fire Department attracted visitors to Capaha Park, where fire trucks were on display for close-up inspection.
Throughout the year, sports events, music festivals, antique car shows, basketball in Indian Park, band concerts, art galleries, holiday parades, fundraisers, cycling and running events, civic clubs, neighborhood picnics and many other special occasions bring us together for good times and fellowship.
