The USA Veterans group that organized the Fourth of July fireworks displays the last four years recently announced it will not have the resources to do so again this year.

This is disappointing, not just to the thousands of people who enjoyed the Fourth festivities at Arena Park, but to those with the USA Veterans as well.

"We are feeling really bad because we can't present this to the community," said organization commander Roger "Zig" Ziegler. "We want to do this every year. We think it brings the community closer together. We are very disappointed."

While the news was disappointing, we'd like to thank the veterans for putting on the show and the other events the last four years. Along with the fireworks show, there was a demolition derby, games and entertainment. It also is the event at which the Southeast Missourian recognized its Spirit of America award winner.

We also commend the group on its timing. Rather than waiting, the USA Veterans wisely announced this decision in plenty of time for another organization to step forward if it wishes to do so.
