The Environmental Protection Agency is at it again. This agency has gained a woeful reputation for rewriting the rules in the middle of the game.

The EPA has decided to re-evaluate the combustion industry and the burning of all types of hazardous wastes.

Among those businesses that would be affected by changes is Lone Star Industries Inc., a major Cape Girardeau employer.

It isn't just a matter of feeling sorry for businesses who have complied with the rules -- and may have to refit their equipment at higher costs. Who do you think pays for those costs? Consumers ultimately foot the bill. The EPA's growing arrogance is an outrage. Someone with clout needs to stand up to these bullies.

It also seems unfair that more stringent regulations could be influenced by competitors. The commercial incinerator industry is upset that kilns have earned a greater market share of burning hazardous waste. And these incinerator companies seem to have the EPA's ear.

When it comes to cleaning up its act, the EPA should be first in line.
