When visitors come to Cape Girardeau, they frequently point out that there aren't very many signs to guide them. Mary Miller at the convention and visitors bureau has a plan to aid visiting motorists: Plenty of directional signs.
The project to give more directions also has been endorsed by the Southeast Missouri State University regents. The cost is to be shared by the university, downtown merchants, the city's parks department and the convention and visitors bureau. It is a plan that is certain to be applauded. Even some longtime residents may find the directional signs useful.
For one thing, the signs help remind everyone of what the city has to offer. There is the university, of course, which is a major destination for newcomers and old-timers alike. Parks, the downtown area, hospitals and other key areas are likely destinations to be featured on the signs.
There already are a variety of signs. Some were put up by the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department. Others were put up by the city. One thing is for sure: The shapes and sizes and colors of all these signs isn't consistent. It is difficult for anyone trying to find his way to spot some of the signs.
One idea to keep in mind as this positive project moves forward is some standardization of the signs. An eye-catching color that is distinctive and different from other signs also would be a bonus.
