Small businesses are a critical segment of our economy. Whether a global operation or a mom-and-pop store, small businesses, and the visionaries behind them, create jobs and infuse capital in the marketplace.
Earlier this month Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Southeast Missouri State University, gave a presentation at the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce First Friday Coffee. Stapleton said the state is behind in entrepreneurial activity, but that local small businesses have played a major role in providing jobs. In fact, he said that small businesses that have been able to weather the financial storm of the past few years provide about 40 percent of jobs in the region.
Maybe you're one of those individuals who would like to own a small business. If so, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship can help you get started. You can learn some of the basics of business through courses offered in Cape Girardeau and elsewhere in the area. The center can also provide guidance to those who already own a business.
Though some probably think they are ready to start a small business, it's possible they are not. A successful entrepreneurial venture goes beyond a good idea. Having an understanding of business basics is important, as is having a mentor to guide you through uncharted territory. It's here where the center can be of assistance.
To learn more about the opportunities available through the center, call 651-2929, send an email to cie@semo.edu, or check out their website at www.semo.edu/cie.
