I had the pleasure of visiting my alma mater, Central High School, on Monday to speak with teachers and students about the program I run from New York City, The Scholastic Awards. My visit was arranged by the energetic librarian, Julia Jorgensen, a real force of nature. I was so proud to be from Cape Girardeau and a product of Central High. The beautiful new facility was only outclassed by the dedicated staff and excitement I witnessed in the learning environment. It is clear that Cape Girardeau values its youths and has established a learning institution that meets the diverse needs of its student population. I loved seeing one of my former teachers, Jane Womack, still on the job, and the valedictorian of my 1967 class, Martha Dodson, on her way to teach math. The great adventure of my life began in Cape and at Central High.
