It's time to strike up the bands in Cape Girardeau and Jackson. These two communities are fortunate to be home to thriving municipal band programs. These muny bands perform concerts throughout the summer, entertaining thousands of appreciative fans.
These programs are steeped in history. This summer tradition has been around since the 1920s.
The Cape Girardeau band performs tonight and each Wednesday through Aug. 11 at the Capaha Park band shell. The concerts begin at 8 p.m..
The Jackson band delights audiences each Thursday beginning at 8 p.m. in the city park.
Directors of both bands are talented men dedicated to musical excellence. Nick Leist returns for an amazing 32nd season in Jackson. Ron Nall marks his sixth year as Cape Girardeau's director.
They direct a talented group of musicians from all walks of life. It's fun to see the familiar community faces as they come together for high-quality family entertainment. Each band numbers about 50 members strong. Many have played in the muny bands year after year.
The bands also invite celebrity guest conductors and musical guests, but it's really the regular band members who draw the fans. The selections cover the musical spectrum from swing to marches.
The concerts typically draw a good crowd -- about 250 to 400 in Cape Girardeau and more than 200 in Jackson. Many are loyal patrons who rarely miss a performance.
And the best part: no admission charge. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair for a relaxing evening of fun and music under the stars.
Just like ice cream, these muny bands are summer treat that make the heat more tolerable.
